I found this an inexpensive, handy little pocket guide and just what I needed as I was about to start a job in Birmingham. It gives me a feel for the place and will be a reference for getting about, shopping and eating out.

A useful guide that led us to many of the tourist attractions in Birmingham that we would have never known about otherwise. Much easier than getting the iPad out of the bag and trying to find somewhere dim enough to use it. A real investment that could turn up a few gems such as the Fountain Pen Museum.

The good & the Bad 28 Feb 2011

First off the good. I commend Thomas cooke for making books that are for less visited cities. As such, the larger publishers such as Dk and Lonely planet are great, but they seem to focus on the main popular locations like Paris, Denmark, New York city etc.

Now the bad. The book is very thin and very basic and I guess there just isn't much to do and see in Birmingham so there wasn't much to put in the book.
Better than nothing and it was well put together. I am not trying at all to be negative, I just don't want to post a glowing review then you get the book and say " What's up with that".
Know all this before you buy and you will be happy.

Another bad was that the price for these is nearly as much as a travel book 4 times its' thickness. I guess because of the rarity of it, they can get the price.
The same thing happened when I tried to find a book on Kiev Ukraine and ended up with a pocket guide.

At least this one has some photos, a lot of the pocket guides I have purchased in the past were void of any visual stimulation.
