Book Description

29 Sep 2010 Through Time
The Birmingham canals truly got underway following an advertisement in Birmingham's Aris's Gazette of 26 January 1767. The plan was to take a waterway from Wolverhampton to Birmingham with a branch to Lord Dudley's coal mines near Wednesbury, and this canal network continued to grow extensively until the 1860s. With the decline in the demand for coal after the Second World War, the BCN lost sixty of its miles, but it has nevertheless largely survived to the present day. R. H. Davies, author of Canal Crimes, takes the reader on a journey from Birmingham along the main line canal through Tipton and Oldbury, exploring the Dudley and Stourbridge canals, and continuing on to Walsall and Wolverhampton. He concludes with images of canals that have vanished over time and of the Black Country Living Museum, which preserves aspects of life in the Black Country that would otherwise be lost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best BCN book 13 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
What a fantastic comprehensive book, well written, with superb before and after photographs taken from the same viewpoint, many in color which is unusual these days. A must read for anyone interested in waterways history, or just history in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Birmingham Canals through time 8 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Last spring (2011) we took our narrow boat to Birmingham for a day or three, then on to the Black Country Living Museum for a similar day or three, and through the Wolverhampton flight onwards for 5 weeks. Despite having taken several hundred photographs and having great memories we decided to purchase this book.
It is great to compare then and now photographs and our own memories. The book is a typical format for Amberley publishing consisting of soft card covers and printed on thick paper with both monochrome and colour photos on every page with a short associated descriptive paragraph..
We would thoroughly recommend this book as both a memento of the Birmingham area canals and a precursor before you visit to give some background knowledge of the area.
