Product Description

Product Description

Birmingham was last visited by these authors for a "Past and Present" volume right back at the beginning of the series, when they produced "No 5 The West Midlands" more than 20 years ago in 1987! It also fell within the Warwickshire volume of 2001, but this is the first time that the city's railways have been treated to a "Past and Present" volume of their own, neatly complementing Andrew Doherty's "Rail Around Birmingham" series. This volume looks in detail at: Birmingham's principal stations: New Street, Snow Hill and Moor Street; The Cross City Line from Barnt Green to Blake Street; Former LMS main line from Birmingham International to Sandwell & Dudley; Former GWR lines through Snow Hill, some now forming part of the Midland Metro light rail network; The Camp Hill line; Loco sheds at Tyseley, Monument Lane, Aston and Saltley; Goods yards and industrial installations, including the Cadbury's system; and, The Harborne branch.

About the Author

Both Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse were born and bred in the area covered by this book and its 'next-door' volume, No 62 South and East Staffordshire. Both were trainspotters in their younger years, and both have been observing and recording the local railway scene since the early 1970s. Geoff is a retired professional photographer formerly working within the University of Birmingham, while John, who worked in a Birmingham bank for many years, is now well-known as a railway photographer and journalist.

This series of books first began 25 years ago and very soon will see its 64th volume in 2011. If you enjoy looking at bygone railway scenes with a comparison contemporary shot taken from the same (where possible) viewpoint then this book is for you. In most cases it is fascinating to examine the amount of change that has taken place since the original photographs were taken, though in some cases it is incredible to see how time has almost stood still. I am the proud owner of every volume and can thoroughly recommend this look at the Birmingham area to you. The authors are to be commended for the high quality of black and white photographs they have used in this work and the very extensive captions ensure the reader does not miss any of the minutae.

Real railway nostalgia 11 July 2010
For anyone interested in railway history this has to be a must.

Series of "then" and "now" photographs of local railway landmarks with informative well researched text. The authors really know their subject.

A must for all midlands railway history enthusiasts.

Makes you realise what a hatchet job Beeching did to the railways in the sixties. With the motorways and cities blocked by cars etc., this is when we could do with a fully operational railway network.

The book brings back so many happy memories of collecting train numbers as a child.
