Produced by Gabriel himself and Daniel Lanois, this album, which served as the musical background to the Alan Parker movie Birdy contains 12 tracks, five of which are instrumental versions of the songs "Family Snapshot," "Not One Of Us," "Rhythm Of The Heat," "Wallflower" and "San Jacinto," from Gabriel's third and fourth albums. The remaining tracks are instrumentals where Gabriel plays alongside his long time contributors Larry Fast, Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta and David Rhodes, among others.

What an unusual warning to put on a CD, almost as if to scare off potentially disappointed buyers! But there is plenty here to bring new pleasure to fans of Peter Gabriel. Rather than fully formed songs, these are short ambient meditations on familiar melodies, chord patterns, or rhythms sampled from Gabriel's own past work. Embellished with additional instrumentation (much of it "world music"-derived) and some new vocals layered on by Gabriel, you'll find here hints of Eno, and minimalists from Steve Reich to Blue Man Group. This said, the sound is still distinctly Gabriel's, and if you're a fan, you're likely to enjoy Birdy, regardless of what the record label might try to lead you to believe!

Peter Gabriel's sixth album overall marks his first venture into motion pictures and is somewhat overlooked. These are tracks from a film released in 1984 based on a novel of the same name. The album is almost entirely instrumental with five of the cuts being adaptations of songs from "Peter Gabriel 3" and "Security", his two previous studio albums. However, three tracks on this album weren't in the film. Obviously, there are no hits to highlight but this album definitely showcases Gabriel's composing ability which is just as good as his songwriting.

This was his first soundtrack, and my personal favorite,one of those rare album you can put on replay while surfing, or doing whatever.
A few instrumental tracks from his other albums appear, as the whole album is instrumental, except for some soulful wailing on one track. Ahead of its time like his first solo album (My second favorite) was, incredibly powerful and highly recommended.
