This is a a very handy compact book listing around 65 separate walks around the County of Gwent. The accent on all the walks is the relationship between the terrain and ecology of the county in terms of its bird populations. Each walk is accompanied by a section of the relevant OS map as well as a sketch map of the access roads to a convenient starting point for a walk or walks. The body of the text gives advice on the walk itself and is devoted to describing the birds of the area. The text is liberally accompanied by full colour photographs and black and white drawings.
For Dr Venables an interest in ornithology was never far from the surface and he has played an important part in the Gwent Ornithological Society (GOS) where he led a group of members who compiled an authoritative volume on the Birds of Gwent, published in 2008. He more recently inspired the production of the volume under review.
Each of the walks described has been 'road tested' by friends and members of the GOS to ensure their accuracy.
Though aimed of course at Gwent inhabitants, it should be of interest to much wider audience.

This book is a delight and takes you to parts of Gwent that I didn't know existed. The walks are clearly described with maps and the types of bird you can expect to see at different times of the year. An excellent companion whether you are a seasoned twitcher or even have no interest in birds as the walks are enjoyable in themselves. Highly recommended.
