At the time of writing this (Spring 2010), Steve Dudley's book has provided a genuine and up-to-date Birder's Guide to the Greek island of Lesvos. It starts with short sections about Lesvos culture, history and the like but rapidly builds into a logically-sectioned "where to see what bird" guide with detailed instructions concerning where to turn off the major roads, what areas not to park on, where not to point optics (army bases!), what birds to expect and even pointers to friendly Tavernas. For someone who has never visited the island before, it was of enormous value and I would heartily recommend it, along with a good road map, even though the binding (also as with Richard Brooks paperback version guide to Lesvos birding) disintergrated after only a few weeks (albeit avid) perusing.
UPDATE: As regards the binding issue, apparently this was a fault with earlier-published books and these can be replaced by returning the cover page to the publishers.
I would also add that the book was invaluable to us - we visited most parts of Lesvos and tallied well over a hundred sightings of bird species (with an embarrassing number of "lifers") following the guide notes - many thanks Steve. I would heartily recommend this book as a genuine, bird-sympathetic bird-watching guide to both new and old visitors to Lesvos.
