Book Description

21 Nov 2011 Helm Field Guides
The UAE is an increasingly popular tourist destination, with a good infrastructure for visitors. This new field guide is based on the bestselling Birds of the Middle East (2nd edition) and covers all the birds of these Gulf states. The new text written by Simon Aspinall and Richard Porter is specific to the Gulf, and new maps are provided for all breeding birds and regular visitors. The plates are recomposed from Birds of the Middle East, with three extra plates of introduced species.

About the Author

Simon Aspinall has lived in the UAE since 1993, pursuing his professional interests in conservation and ecology throughout the Middle East and Caucasus. He has published extensively on natural history, especially within Arabia and with an emphasis on birds; traveling widely in that quest he has probably seen more species in the region than any other modern-day birder. Richard Porter has been involved with birds in the Middle East since 1966 and is an adviser on bird conservation for BirdLife International. He is the author or co-author of several books on the Middle East and the groundbreaking Flight Identification of European Raptors. John Gale, Mike Langman and Brian Small are world-renowned bird illustrators with many books to their credit.

The book was delivered promptly and in good condition. If you are a bird watcher visiting the UAE you will find this field guide most useful. Indeed the guide that took me birding there was using the same guide.

Handy, compact guide for the UAE. Well illustrated and good not to have to carry a book of the reason and work back to double check species/regional occurence. Good size so carrying it around is no problem. Would bve good to have the equivalent for some other countries when travelling to them as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the UAE, but beware in the regions beyond 24 Nov 2013
By Ted C - Published on Amazon.com
Beware, the description in Amazon is erroneous, otherwise the book is well done for the UAE. The Amazon description says the book covers all the species in the Gulf States. Untrue. The book's introduction clearly states that it only covers the species known or suspected to occur in the UAE. I birded throughout Oman and this book was less and less suitable the further south I went. It is a poor substitute for Birds of the Middle East by the same authors when you stray very far from the UAE. If you only went by the Amazon description you would be sorely disappointed as I was when I tried to use the field guide in the Sultanate of Oman.
