Product Description

Synopsis

Lavishly illustrated with 500 colour photographs of sharp-shinned hawks, American kestrels, merlins, peregrine falcons, ospreys, golden eagles, ferruginous hawks, bald eagles, and nine other North American raptors. Birds of Prey features shots so close the birds loom as large as life. Scholz has combined instructive line drawings and engaging and informative text with Merrick's stunning photos to create the most magnificent and comprehensive books on birds of prey. The book includes a section on techniques for the artist and carver, with a 66-photo sequence detailing the steps involved in painting an American kestrel, and photos and tips on sculpting heads and making eyes to create life-like raptor carvings.

If you're not familiar with the work of Floyd Scholz, then you're missing something wonderful.
I first became interested in wood carvings of birds with the work of Mike Wood, and English carver, when I came across one of his pieces in Bath in 1994, and became a collector.
Imagine my delight when I discovered the Museum of Art in Bennington, Vermont in 2000 containing a gallery of wooden carved birds, to a exceptional standard, by Scholz.
Being unable to afford his pieces, the next best thing are his books, which, although based on carving techniques, also contain many wonderful pictures of his craft.
If you appreciate ornithology or just wonderful things, get into Floyd Scholz.

This is a great reference book for bird carvers, not only does it have incredible photographs but the text points out details that you might miss. The drawings are very helpful and the measurements of each species covered is very helpful. I recomend this book to anyone carving birds of prey.

While this book does not describe habitat much, it is the best illustrative piece I have ever seen. This is a "must have" for those of us trying to identify hawks in our area. I highly commend all involved in the making of this book - the photography and attention to detail are impressive.
