Product Description

Review

'Rich celebration of the interplay of birds with ancient human needs for magic and mystery, not to mention a well-shaped story or poem' The Irish Times 'A marvellous compendium of birds history and folklore ... a testament to the author's and publisher's dedication to excellence' Walking World Ireland

Product Description

A companion to bird-identification guides, this book focuses on our interaction with birds, wild, domesticated and extinct. A general introduction covers birds in Irish mythology and folklore, birds as omens, harbingers and food, and bird-related beliefs, proverbs and curses. This is followed by a species-by-species account, with each name and its meaning, a description and associated beliefs, myths, legends, weather lore, proverbs, culinary traditions and place names. Most birds in Ireland are included, and the more common they are the longer the entry. Each entry ends with a Facts & Figures section, such as species numbers in Ireland, where it is common and its longevity.

Anderson goes far beyond the standard remit of a field identification guide here. For each native bird species he branches out into literature, mythology, folklore, place names and culinary traditions. This makes the book hugely entertaining and very readable.

It is very well laid out: elegance matched with clarity.

Extensive research from both oral and written sources has been brought together here in what was clearly a labour of love by a true scholar of the natural world.

I was surprised at the amount of information in this book. The production is gorgeous and the paintings exquisite but the real joy is finding so many quaint beliefs, superstitions and sayings about most of the birds to be found in Ireland.

While giving useful details about the species, the book also gives a selection of Irish names. There's something for most of us, even poetry! It's probably not something to be read through in any kind of hurry but I found it great for dipping into and visitors nearly always remark on it.
