Although quite expensive at the full price I'm well satisfied with this buy, especially at the price Amazon was selling it for. The coloured plates are well drawn and clear. The text is up to date and the distribution maps helpful. Although too heavy to take on my Ethiopian holiday I'm sure this will help identify all the species caught on camera upon my return.

This is a very well presented book which is easy to read. It follows the usual excellent approach of other Helm Field Guides, with plates, maps and descriptions on facing pages. The index is clear and helpful. The artwork and printing is high quality. I look forward to using it in Ethiopia in November when I go with Birdfinders.Having used the companion volume "Birds of East Africa", I am sure that it will meet my expectations and be very user-friendly.

Written and illustrated by ornithologists who know the birds and know the logistics of travelling and finding birds in the region. Field guide is lightweight, easy to carry and use in the field. The text fully compliments the very accurate illustrations of the birds. Even if you are not going to Ethiopia or neighbouring countries, worth buying just to add to your 'bookshelf collection'! A great field guide!

Exceeded expectations, well-laid out with illustrations, text and distribution maps all on the same page. Excellent colour plates, informative, and I can't wait to start using it when I go out to Ethiopia later this year!

This book is a must for all those seeking a complete description of the birds of this region, as oppose to the numerous publications describing the birds in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

This is a review of the second edition which has some important changes to it and is a much better book. It covers a region where it's main use is likely to be for birdwatchers going to Ethiopia as it is unlikely many will go to Djibouti, Eritrea or Somalia! It is however interesting seeing the mouth-watering endemics occuring in Djibouti and Somalia where one day it may be safe to go. The illustrations are excellent and the text precise although the maps are of little use to finding areas of Ethiopia where the species occurs as they are so small. The book is quite heavy but this can't be helped as there are so many species in the region! As we run birdwatching tours (birdfinders.co.uk) to Ethiopia every year seeing around 500 species, this is the recommended book for all our clients which I think says it all.
