Review

This book is not only indispensable to any bird-watcher visiting New Guinea and the adjacent islands, but, owing to the wealth of its information, it will be of great interest to anyone who is seriously interested in birds. American Scientist

Product Description

This book is the first definitive ornithological field guide to New Guinea, the world's second largest island and one of the richest tropical environments in the Old World. Because of its isolation, New Guinea's biota includes spectacular radiations of unusual plants and animals (of which the birds of paradise are perhaps best known). The region has long attracted naturalists, ecologists, and anthropologists. This book treats all of the more than 700 species of birds recorded from the region, illustrating more than 600 of them in forty-seven fine color plates and eight black-and-white halftone plates. The text contains species accounts treating identification, distribution, ecology, vocalizations, and behavior. This is preceded by a detailed introduction to the region, with sections on climate, biogeography, rainforest ecology, and conservation. A chief contribution of the book is the wealth of information on the habits of many of the region's little-known species. Included is an ornithological gazetteer, along with four maps showing natural features and important ornithological localities.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative,a work of art., 17 Jan 2001
This review is from: Birds of New Guinea (Handbook ... of the Wau Ecology Institute) (Paperback)
This book is a godsend to the birdwatcher who wants to visit this strange but beautiful place,as there is no other field guide to this region on the market.Having no competition does not mean however that the authors have paid any less attention to detail...the plates are superb and the text is brief but informative, and useful for helping with identification of the more difficult species. However, the only thing missing are the range maps...there are none at all, meaning you have to refer to the text every time you wish to know where the bird occurs. This makes it difficult to get a quick ID on a bird in the field in some cases. On the whole,a very interesting and beautiful book, with only the odd flaw.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful book, 27 Jan 2012
This review is from: Birds of New Guinea (Handbook ... of the Wau Ecology Institute) (Paperback)
Considering that this book was produced in 1986 the plates are well detailed and much better than I have seen in much more modern field guides. (for other countries). The colours are not as bright as the actual birds in the field but important features are shown well. Unfortunately there are no distibution maps although the text does give distribution guidance.

Since there is currently no other field guide this is a must for anyone making a bird trip to PNG. Since only second hand copies are now available it can be rather expensive although affordable copies are available on Amazon from time to time. Since it is traded regularly there is always the possibility of recuping most of the outlay when the bird trip has been completed until such time, that is, as the long awaited second edition is published!

Bruce Beehler (in May 2008) thinks the new edition will be 2 - 3 years away so until then a copy of the first edition is essential if you can find/afford/borrow one!
