About the Author
Michael and Patricia are trained zoologists, whose knowledge contributes to the intimate images of wildlife they create. They concentrate their work in rainforests and deserts, the habitats they most enjoy, and their pictures have been published widely internationally. Previous books as author/photographer include Costa Rica; Wildlife of the National Parks & Reserves (Fundacion Neotropica), and as photographer, The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica by Jay M. Savage (University of Chicago Press).

For visitors to Costa Rica who are keen on birds, this book is very good although it does not give you all the most common birds, particularly where there are several varieties that look very similar. The areas of the country it talks about are a little confusing as the map is not consistent with them so you need a map too to be sure your identification is correct. The book is the main one marketed in Costa Rica itself, so buy it before you go - Amazon is far cheaper than anything you will buy out there.

During our trip to Costa Rica this book was invaluable. Many members on our party felt it was one of the best publications available, and it often did a circuit of the bus to identify birds that had been seen. Excellent value for money.
