Review

'This absorbing, chattily informative book of avian-human social history sets out the challenge ahead, in our ever-changing relationship with our feathered friends, to prevent another species of bird going the way of the auk.' The Daily Mail 'The book is a riot of fact and information, familiar to seasoned twitchers but fascinating to the beginner. [!] The message of the book is one of hope: the future of birds looks rosier now than it has done for some time. But we must not get complacent, and reading this book reminds us that bird-watching is a small act of revolution.' The Mail on Sunday More praise for Stephen Moss's previous work: 'Chatty, genuine, sincere and often quite funny.' British Wildlife 'Full of good stuff if you want to settle down for a good read.' Bird Watching 'Delightful' Harper's Bazaar

Good material but.. 16 May 2012
By Chris
Format:Hardcover
Firstly to say that I enjoyed the information that this book put across. It was an interesting read. So why only 2 stars?

One is that it is obviously a TV tie in book, but the DVD, which puts the same information across in a better way, doesn't exist. It would be a preferable purchase, though, as the series was better than the book. It even reads like a script for a documentary in places, especially in the opening and closing of chapters.

It fails to have any pictures. If you are a seasoned birder you would not need them, but if this is an introduction in some ways it could illustrate some of the birds. At one point it even describes Peter Scott's last painting - why not put a copy into the book?

If you want to read a really good example of a natural history TV tie in book, then I would recommend Halycon River Diaries, which produced a beautiful engaging book. Here I would have suggested the BBC puts out the DVD of the series, rather than the book.
