Review

Top Birding Sites of Europe, with a CD of 60 bird songs and calls characteristic of the sites covered, makes wonderful reading. --Bromley Times, 12 May 2011

Top Birding Sites of Europe is not a tool for planning holidays, but a lively celebration of some stunning bird-filled places. Couzens aims to inspire, and he does exactly that with well-informed text, brilliant photos and a CD containing 60 evocative bird voices.
--BBC Wildlife Magazine, June 2011

If you are thinking that it is time you ventured further afield with your bird watching, then maybe you should consider purchasing this book. What I particularly liked...is that it does not just recommend the famous sites..but also includes many less well known spots --The Good Book Guide, 1 May 2011

A book written to inspire people to visit the various sites by describing their ornithological attractions in general terms. The chapters are illustrated by beautiful and evocative colour photographs portraying the highlight birds as well as typical habitat and scenery
--British Birds, May 2011

"The wide array of gorgeous bird photos was what drew me in to the book in the first place ... I got exactly what I wanted from this book - some great stories, and a head filled with wondrous journeys. Thank you Dominic."

4.0 out of 5 stars More about the UK needed 8 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
Hot on the heels of his worldwide book on the subject (Top 100 Birding Sites of the World), Dominic Couzens focuses down on Europe and selects thirty top places to visit, which includes all of the seventeen European sites that were in the first book.

Only two of the sites are in the UK, and those are north Norfolk and the Outer Hebrides. Both of these were in the worldwide version, so I was surprised that no others were added, such as the Scottish highlands or the New Forest. Most of the other European sites are predictable choices such as the Camargue, Coto Doñana , Extremadura, Pyrenees, Hortobagy, plus the Po, Ebro and Danube Deltas. Islands feature well with Lesvos, Corsica and the Azores. The book features quite a few northern destinations such as Falsterbo, Oulu, Kuusamo, Bialowieza Forest, Biebrza River and Varanger Peninsula. However there are a few sites that I think most birders will not have considered visiting such as Matsalu Bay in Estonia, the High Tatras National Park in Slovakia, the Kalmykian Steppes in Russia and Pripyat River in Belarus.

Each location is described in around 1500 words, with plenty of information on the key species and the habitats in which they are found. Those featured in the first book simply get an almost exact copy of the existing text, although different photographs are used. Recordings of sixty species that are featured (two per site) can be found on an accompanying CD by Hannu Janes. The book is well illustrated, and it is clear that the publisher has tried hard to find stunning images rather than just accept the first available option. Such a book really needs some basic information on how to reach each location - at least an indication of the nearest large towns. Similarly maps showing the same and suggestions of where to stay are obvious omissions from an otherwise enjoyable book.

4.0 out of 5 stars TOP BIRDING SITES 18 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like opinionated reading because it invites judgement so for me its a interesting read. I found that Couzens has two 3rd places and I could not find a 23rd place! Never mind. The book is certainly a help in guiding one to the better places in Europe. He describes the birding possibilties of each location well but in broad terms, which is all that is needed for a book like this. I would have liked a book that covered the Western Paleartic rather than Europe and perhaps one day he or someone else may do this.
