There is much fine music hidden away in the neglected archives of the Victorian and Edwardian parlour song. You may find the sheet music in the piano stool of an aged aunt, or in a box at the back of a second hand book shop. Blow off the dust, and enjoy these forgotten treasures which so delighted our grandparents.
These are polished performances, respectful without being dull. Robert White has a clear strong voice, and Stephen Hough accompanies with verve. The recording has a pleasant resonant ring to it.
What wonderful tunes these are! If you are not familiar with the genre, try Pale hands I loved, or Little grey home in the west. I imagine many composers of so-called greater music would give any money to write tunes as fine as these.
For those of you who have enjoyed the film Topsy Turvy, you will find Sir Arthur Sullivan's The lost chord on this CD, in full, rather than truncated as in the film.
I hope that White and Hough give us a second selection soon.

I came across this album while looking for songs by Oley Speaks. It is a lovely collection of tunes from another era! Nice memories!
