Product Description

TWELVE CLASSIC CHAIR PIECES, TWELVE CLASSIC DINNER PARTIES. John Bird and John Fortune celebrated 150 shows with Channel 4 by releasing twelve of their best interview pieces, alongside twelve classic dinner parties. Twenty-four memorable comedy jewels drawn from fifteen years of Bremner, Bird and Fortune. Over 160 minutes of the sharpest satire around. Sir George Parr has been a banker, a politician, a general, a businessman and a civil servant. He has spoken up for every political party and put his foot in it week after week after week. Over the years the Two Johns have used him to draw out the absurdity of policy makers, decision takers and the suited and booted in power. Alongside they’ve delivered a series of critically acclaimed sketches with Frances Barber and Pauline McLynn. Over dinner, the four put the world to rights without realising the spotlight is on them. This very best of selection is a perfect way to enjoy again favourite sketches, and appreciate why two million people can’t be wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine comedy 7 Sep 2009

Bliss, just bliss. I've been hoping for ages that they'd release the Two Johns dialogues on DVD and to have all those dinner parties makes this my comedy release of the year. I don't think I've ever laughed out loud so often at any comedy DVD. The fact that these brilliant sketches happen also to constitute a social history of our times beyond the dreams of socal historians is just a bonus.

A very witty, funny record of these brilliant comics. It is relevant and pithy even many years later. A wonderfully wry outlook on politics and the human condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless humour 11 Jan 2014

It is such a shame that we have lost one half of this duo. Their subjects for discussion are just as valid in 2014 as when first broadcast 7 years ago, and they were so believable as interviewer and interviewee (George Parr), apart from the odd moment when they were creased up laughing. They swapped roles each week. It's hard to believe that there was no script.
This DVD is a must for those who like quality humour, and should be compulsory viewing for Government ministers and officials.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Comedy, But Not Easy To Take In One Sitting 26 Sep 2009
I really like the sketches in Bremner, Bird and Fortune, so I thought I would check these out. Here you get nearly 3 hours of John Bird and John Fortune doing their interview sketches, and the dinner parties they do with two comediennes. These all come from the last ten years of the show and are funny; the way they mock middle class people is just hilarious; and the interviews are very funny and mock the government to no end. Their comedy often gives a message that these people are disillusional about what's going on in society and have no idea what every day people do.

My favourite includes the dogs where Bird and Fortune dress up as dogs for the interview, and the Admiral is funny too. The dinner parties are all very funny so it's hard to find the best.

The only problem with this DVD is it's too long for one sitting, the comedy is very similar so you'll need to cut it up into pieces (not literally!) and watch it on a few nights. I'm not saying the comedy isn't good, it's just if you watch it at once you soon get fed up of the style, remember Bird and Fortune did these one a week, so they were not meant to be digested in one foul swoop.

There are no extras on this, but there are English subtitles, otherwise this is pretty much what you see is what you get. Shame there were no Bremner sketches in the extras, but this is just a Bird and Fortune affair.

This DVD will be good for future viewing though, and will have a lot of come back to appeal, as it's got historic value and it's very funny. Not sure how I will feel about it in ten years time, but I think I will still enjoy it.

Worth a rent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comedy without continual innuendo 20 Mar 2014

Consistently funny observations about all human life without the need for continual coarseness and sexual smuttiness of todays so called comedians.

Wonderful stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic satire 8 Mar 2014

Nice to have a record of this material as a complement to the 3 audio cassettes and 1 CD of The Long Johns. WARNING - the pressing of this DVD is not the greatest - I bought 2 copies (the second to check on the first) since I found I could play them only on 50% of the DVD players I own.
