Bipolar Disorder

Understanding Symptoms & Mood Swings & Treatment

You are about to discover proven steps and strategies on how to properly support and care for a loved one with bipolar disorder. More often than not, people whose loved one has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder wonder what to expect and how they should show their love and support the best way they can. It can be very difficult for those who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder to accept their condition. In the same way, it can also be overwhelming and at the same time frightening for the family and friends of people with bipolar disorder, especially if they do not know the appropriate ways of supporting and dealing with the condition.

Bipolar disorder, which is also known as manic depression, is a type of mental or psychiatric disorder that is marked by extreme mood swings. Although there have been continuous research and studies on the condition, its ultimate cause remains unknown. On the other hand, some of the presumed contributors to bipolar disorder include brain chemistry, genetics and life events.

All people experience various events in their daily lives; however, people who are suffering due to bipolar disorder experience more persistent episodes of life’s “ups and downs,” that affect their ability to function as an individual. Bipolar disorder can affect one’s thoughts, moods and behavior.

In recent studies, mental health experts estimate that over 2 million adults are afflicted with bipolar disorder. Thus, if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with this condition, the most important step to discard uncertainty is education. Educating yourself about bipolar disorder can help you deal with a loved one who has been inflicted with this unfortunate condition.

You should know that an individual who is suffering from bipolar disorder has his/her own difficulties to deal with; however, there are also challenges when caring for someone who is bipolar. Regardless whether you live together with some one who is bipolar or not, several steps need to be taken in order to deal with bipolar appropriately.

3.0 out of 5 stars What can one expect from 33 pages? 17 July 2014

This is a 33 page book. It is by definition a simplistic look at Bipolar Disorder. One should not expect a textbook on the subject in that amount of space. Your expectations need to be appropriate to the book. If you're expecting a Rolls Royce you're going to be disappointed with a Dinky Car. So set your expectations appropriately. This is one of those Japanese no-name knock-offs with plastic wheels that don't resemble any particular car.

The book focuses on defining and describing Bipolar Disorder, how the family can best deal with it, and what the treatments are. In general, each of the areas of concern are dealt with at a very high level. There is very little obvious bad information and the information is presented in a reader-friendly manner.

On the other hand, there is a great deal of repetition. Things are repeated multiple times. And sometimes they are duplicated one after the other. Sometimes whole blocks of information are presented in a slightly different method. (You get the idea?). The book needed severe content and organization editing. Basically it looked like the writer needed to produce a certain number of pages/words and didn't have the information to fill up the quota. In other cases, they really didn't understand what they were discussing. So they repeated themselves.

From an editing standpoint there are several errors and typos in addition to the repetition. However, there are far fewer than is typical for this type of book. Definitely better organization and less repetition would aid this book.

Generally speaking the book is what it is -- a quick pamphlet on bipolar for people who haven't heard of it before. It definitely isn't worth a 5 star rating, but neither is it worth a 1 star. At 99 cents or on Free promotion it might be worth a glance if you have need a very basic understanding.

I am fortunate that none of my family members are suffering from bipolar disorder. The reason I got this book was that it was on a promotion and I got interested in the topic. I can say that the book is a great introduction to bipolar disorder. It explains different types of DB, causes and treatments. If you have someone who is suffering from bipolar disorder then this book is a must read for you.
