"A valuable educational resource for individuals with bipolar disorder and the people who care about them. I highly recommend it for patients and their family members and friends as an enlightened, pragmatic, and empathic resource for this very complex and challenging illness." -- Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

"An invaluable tool for patients and families living with bipolar disorder. The author incorporates real life stories, expert advice, symptoms and diagnosis, modern treatment options, and resources to help make living with this disorder tolerable. Most importantly, the concepts and information presented in this book are practical." -- Doody's 3-Star Review

"A concise guide to bipolar disorders. Written in a nontechnical jargon, this guide is ideal for patients and their families who wish to gain an understanding of bipolar disorders... he also offers advice on how to live with the disorder, and how not to become its victim." -- Rochelle Caviness, Large Print Reviews

"An excellent guide to both counseling and drug options." -- Library Bookwatch

"The marvel of this book is its ability to present information in a detailed, understandable manner, while avoiding pitfalls of being overly weighted in professional jargon, or skimpy in specific neurological and behavioral detail." -- Susan McCabe, Journal of Psychosomatic Research

Two of the most important goals for individuals with Bipolar Disorder are taking appropriate medication and learning about the disorder. Dr. Mondimore makes the latter easy and entertaining. Patients and family members will find this book a valuable resource. As a clinician, I regularly recommend this book to my clients with Bipolar Disorder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless information on Bipolar disorder, 24 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) (Paperback)
This book is an excellent resource of information. The author makes several references to Dr. Jamison who is one of my favorite authors and pioneer in the search for a cure for bipolar disorder. This book is simple, easy to read, straight forward, and informative. It is a book for the entire family who is dealing with bipolar disorder. Dr. F. Mondimore is talking to the reader not at the reader. Job Well Done.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential guide for navigating life with bipolar, 7 Mar 2004

This review is from: Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) (Paperback)
Having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, this book helped tremendously in accepting the illness and dealing with it in a constructive way - one that would keep its impact to a minimum. It uses a mix of medical findings, research evidence and anecdotal experiences to explain what bipolar disorder is and how to best live with it. All areas are comprehensively explained, but without becoming academic - even the explanation of bipolar brain chemistry is understandable. The chapters on preventing mania and depression give invaluable advice on life changes that can help reduce the chance of relapsing. This book helped change the course of my life. I cannot recommend it highly enough, both to people diagnosed with bipolar disorder and their families and friends.
