About the Author

Neil A. Campbell combined the investigative nature of a research scientist with the soul of an experienced and caring teacher. He earned his M.A. in Zoology from UCLA and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Riverside, where he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. Dr. Campbell published numerous research articles on how certain desert plants thrive in salty soil and how sensitive plant (Mimosa) and other legumes move their leaves. His 30 years of teaching in diverse environments included general biology courses at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernadino Valley College, where he received the college's first Outstanding Professor Award in 1986. Most recently Dr. Campbell was a visiting scholar in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. In addition to his authorship of this book, he coauthored Biology: Concepts and Connections and Essential Biology with Jane Reece. Each year, over 600,000 students worldwide use Campbell/Reece bioloogy textbooks.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a post-doctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). As as an editor at Benjamin Cummings, Dr. Reece played major roles in a number of successful textbooks. Format:Paperback
If you are doing degree level biology or just want to up your knowledge on the world around you - then this is the book for you! One of the greatest biology books ever written with great articles/interviews added around the main detailed text.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book 4 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
Having just started a Biosciences degree i have found this book to be easy to read and it doesn't assume any prior knowlege like so many other books do. The accompanying cd is great with lots of quizes and other activies to really help all the information to sink in.

But the best thing is the access to the online materials. The book allows one year access and the cover price of the book is worth paying for the web site alone.

Buy this book and fall in love with life :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible 26 May 2011
Format:Paperback
This book has been described as the biology bible and its fair to say that it lives up to expectation. It covers a wide variety of topics, and has a really good level of detail whilst still being easy to understand.

The edition I bought (Pie) is available extremely cheaply now and whilst there are changes and improvements it represents a very good value textbook. I have also seen copies of the 4th and 6th Editions and there aren't that many massive changes between them, so I would say this one offers the best combination of up-to-dateness and value for money.

Everything is explained clearly, with lots of high quality diagrams to further enhance learning. I'm currently an A level student, and will most definitely be taking it to Uni with me when I go off later this year (hopefully!) to do a Biology related degree.

In short its fabulous.

This book is a wonderful text for a first year degree biologist; it is easy to read with many clear illustrations and diagrams and the interactive material is good.

However, once you have past the first year, this book is of little use to you, and you will require more detailed texts specific to your modules. Thus, this book proves costly.

Personally, I found it wonderful and a real asset in my first year, and have utterly ignored it in my second.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great referance book 10 Nov 2006
By Sven
Format:Paperback
This is a great book for people studying a level biology or degree level biology. I study biochem and find this book complements lectures very well. Also if you want to read more into specific subject this book can help a little but more specific books are needed if you want to read into greater depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 19 April 2014
By LadyK
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Recommended to me by one of my lecturers at uni. She calls it 'the bible'. Believe me it is, if I have trouble understanding any other text books I return back to this and it gives me the background knowledge and then some to help me understand the more technical detail.
