From the Author

My reasons for writing this book arise from a dilemma and a
long-held conviction associated with this dilemma. It has always seemed to
me that biological psychology is unnecessarily frightening to a large
number of psychology students - I hear so often "I was never any good at
science in school". Yet biology forms an essential part of the subject and
many of this same intimidated population also wish seriously to know about
the biological perspective on psychology. So, I was determined to write a
textbook that would take all of the fear out of the subject but without
diluting the content.

'Toates’ Biological Psychology is the most thoughtful and thought-provoking textbook for the field available today. Kent Berridge, University of Michigan

Biological Psychology, second edition, provides a comprehensive and lively introduction to the core topics, concepts, research and debates that are central to our understanding of the brain and the biological basis of our behaviour. The new edition has been thoroughly revised and fully updated and includes an expanded treatment of evolutionary psychology.

Assuming no prior knowledge of biology, the text uses everyday experiences to fully explain complex concepts in an interesting and accessible way.  This is complemented by a range of inventive pedagogical features and extensive full-colour illustrations to stimulate interest and help students to develop and test their understanding.

Features:

  • A user-friendly approach guides students without a background in biology through the course of topics, without sacrificing depth or detail.
  • Learning outcomes, section summaries and 'test your knowledge' questions are included to aid the learning process and allow students to manage their progress.
  • ‘Signposts’ and ‘bringing things together’ highlight the connections within and between fields of study to encourage a wider and more considered understanding.
  • An extended introduction and a new boxed feature on evolutionary psychology ensures students are informed by the debates within this topical area.
  • ‘A personal angle’ introduces key figures connected with each area.

Online resources accompanying the text can be found at www.pearsoned.co.uk/toates

These include interactions, animations, justifications for ‘test your knowledge’ questions, and a range of question material to help consolidate understanding.  ‘Further reflections’ on selected topics and research updates are also available to challenge students to achieve a deeper understanding.
