Having bought a number of the Marco Polo British Light Music series and been pleased with all of them, this is one of the best. A number of the composer's best known works are included but, for me, the best part of the CD is the works that I did not know. In particular the Saxophone Concerto, Second Movement is a real 'find'. Thoroughly recommended CD, fine recording, delightful music. If you know and like Elizabethan Serenade, String Song and Sailing By then you'll love the rest.

I have not heard this album myself as I bought it for a friend who was looking for "Sailing By". So enamoured is he with this piece, that he telephoned the BBC in Glasgow to ask if they could identify it for him. The next step was to get me to find a copy for him. He is thoroughly delighted with his CD and thinks it is beautiful. It is one of those cases when to his surprise he recognised much of the content and did not realise that it had been written by Ronald Binge.
Definitely recommended for those who enjoy light classical.

It isn't Beethoven or Vaughan Williams but all the better for it. Light and fluffy at times, this collection of music just waltzes in and out like a lazy summers afternoon kip. From the joyful Elizabethan Serenade to the everlasting "Sailing By", you will feel all the better for wiling away your hours on board the Ronald Binge riverboat. It's fun and undemanding, just right after a hard days work which is what it was always meant for.

Probably the most perfectly presented music CD ever. Great variety, every track a gem, like others, I knew a few,
and others without their history, and each one so sensitively composed, this man was a genius and through his
immense talent lives on. Described by Brian Kay as the Avant-garde of light music,it's music's lovers great lose
he still remains anonymous to many. Buy now.

This music Ronald Binge )appeals to me and probably a good many others of my generation :- easy listening, melodic, recognisable tunes and won't annoy the neighbours if I have the volume too high...My generation?-over 80's. Some of my grandchildren like it, too. A.C.

Everybody knows Binge's 'Elizabethan Serenade', but there are so many other truly memorable pieces of music by him and some of the very best are on this CD. My own favourites are 'The Watermill', a gently atmospheric piece which uses the beautiful sound of the oboe to perfection, and his Concerto for Alto Saxophone, a piece which captures the different characteristics of this lovely instrument, from melancholy to vibrantly alive.
If you buy no other CD of this composer's work, get this one!

Wonderful light classical music with drama and lilting evocative melodies for many happy hours of enjoyable listening.
This is a 'bright' recording with great definition and breadth giving a sense of perspective to the music.Track 17 seems a little over done with a wonderful piano solo but an orchestral backing which has a hyper treble balance.
This an excellent recording true to the Binge idiom and worth buying just for track 13 Water Mill and track 19 Sailing By - but all 19 tracks will delight you I am sure

I think Binge deserves a higher classification than "light music". Perhaps he should have had a more exciting name. I think he fits into an English style if there is such a thing which begins with Elgar's less monumental works like Chanson de Matin and continues through Butterworth and Delius to Rutter. I only really want to comment on the Concerto for Alto Saxophone. Having heard how much a saxophone could contribute to jazz I thought there was real scope for it to be in classical works. I've bought a couple of CDs of saxophone concertos but was a little disappointed. The saxophone concerto on this CD is very good and combined with delightful pieces of music like The Watermill and Sailing By, I thoroughly recommend this CD.
