At last I know that someone understands,

This review is from: Binge No More: Your Guide to Overcoming Disordered Eating (Paperback)
I have had an eating disorder for a few years, but didn't really know it until I read this book. It was as if I was reading about myself. It was good to know that at last someone believed, and took seriously, the guilt, the shame, the 'out of control' feelings, and the arguments and battles in my head. This book has now become my bible. I bought it about a month ago, and I can honestly say it has changed my life. It contains lots of explanations and most importantly advice and tips on how to stay in control and feel good about myself. I do small things like look at buildings when I'm out instead of focusing on what the people around me look like, and how fat I am. I think ahead so that I can plan to ensure I won't be in a 'high risk' situation which will make me want to binge. These are just 2 of the many wonderful tips contained in this book.I'm sure there are thousands of people like me who would benefit from reading this book. I've spent hundreds of pounds on diets, slimming pills, gym clubs etc. but this the best money I have ever spent-I now have peace of mind, am in control and I am eating healthily. I know all this has helped me to stop binge eating and eating secretly, which will lead to me losing weight, but now for the first time in years, its not losing weight which is a priority, but feeling good about myself, and addressing the problems which gave me an eating disorder in the first place. Thoroughly recommended.

At last someone who understands!,

I have bought so many self help books over the years it's scary. This book actually does what it promises. The author is sympathetic and understanding, whilst being practical. Reading this book made me realise I am not alone in my obsessive thoughts about dieting/ weight/dress size and fitness. It also made me realise that the only person that can change this situation is me. Thoroughly recommended.

Really helpful,

I've read quite a few books about the emotional aspects of overeating and I've given all of them away apart from this one. There is alot in here that I found really helpful. The parts I found helpful are analysing the build-up to a binge / overeating session and being able to see where it starts and how different decisions could take one away from the spiral into a binge. It looks alot at reasons why people over-eat but most importantly it gets the reader to think about why s/he does. There are some aspects which I didn't agree with - for example, the suggestion to 'do the opposite to what you are feeling' to me felt completely at odds with the rest of the book about being honest with yourself about how you are feeling. The practical idea of setting up times when you will eat is useful because it showed me just how hard I find it to stick to those times which in itself made me more aware of why I find it so hard. It's not solved my overeating but it's really helped!
