We bought these to use on a field course in Borneo - because we'd be working on a lake and in the forest the waterproofing was a big selling point, as was the advertised range of up to 10km. In practice we found these walkie-talkies to be useless - even on relatively flat terrain the range seems very short and as soon as there's a hill they don't work at all. On the plus side they're robust, the batteries last a long time and the charger is nice but none of that is any good when they don't have the performance to be of any use.

Not recommended if you're after something to use in any sort of difficult terrain.

A very durable radio, it has performed well for me however it is a little heavier and larger than most other PMR's.
Maintains good signal strength even in built up areas, we have had problems inside large metal skinned buildings though.
The belt clip broke off the first day I used the radio and when I tried to contact Binatone for a replacement I never received a reply. I purchased the radio for its water resistant spec but have not put it to the test.
Battery life is very good, with continual use, we quite easily got 14 hours out of the pair.
I've noted that a lot of sites advertise that it has VOX (voice operated switch) functionality, if your able to find this please let me know where it is. There are no external connections and the instruction booklet doesn't mention it.

Overall I would recommended this radio as it does what it says on the tin (except VOX).

Ever since I bought this product I haven't been able to stop using it, the moment it is taken out of the packaging you can tell it is well thought out in its design. Most radios are broken because they are dropped if not lost, the super hand loop next to the arial means I can easily de/attach it from me and even if it is dropped onto concrete or into water it is not going to suffer. Range and clarity is the best I've come across with family radios and the only hindrance I have found is that the volume buttons are easily pressed however it compensates for its colossal battery life and to buy another 2 batteries for it only costs £5.00. Best for all us expeditionists and those of us on Adventure Training.
