Perfectly adequate for quality cordless internet calls...., 31 May 2008
I dropped the rating one star because the instructions could have been clearer - however if one perseveres then one is getting a single cordless internet phone for a bargain price. I bought it to make cheap international calls and use the Skype features. It looks good, feels good, the base is attractive and sturdy and the quality of the calls is without fault. I have used it in various parts of the house (we have solid brick walls)and have not had any degradation. My wife made an international call last night and I asked her about the sound quality - she just thought that it was a regular phone - that says it all. Other than that - I am lucky enough to get 7Mbps broadband speed, am using a new PC and have downloaded Skype's very latest release (last night)which improves sound quality.

I'm very sad that this product ins't exactly what I expected it to be or should I say that it did something I wasn't expecting. I would give it a 5 star review on basis that it performs very well:
Positive:
- Good range, never had any call drops within the 3 bedroom house up and downstairs
- Battery life is also not bad
- Sound quality is amazing, much better than any of the headphone and mics direct on the PC.
- for the price I wouldn't expect any better, well done Binatone.
Negative:
- This is the point where it falls out! It has damaged my laptop. Yes, because the base station is self powered its USB connector feeds the PC or laptop with current. Now, how much that is I don't know, but sufficient to damage the laptop. I didn't notice that this current was causing an overheating process to the laptop. Only when it started failing I noticed that a smell like burned plastic was coming from the laptop. We have two exactly same model laptops at home and I also tried it with the second but paying attention to the heat and yes, it also was causing this. If connected to a Hub, imagine that it powers the hub even when not connected to the PC the hub has all lights on. Not sure if this was one single case but I wouldn't risk it again. Sorry Biantone and their helpdesk didn't solve my problem either, not wanting to help me with the repair costs. Goes back now this unit.

Defective by design, 12 April 2009
Good: Easy to set up and install, good call quality (some static after 20m, but better than my regular cordless phone), has lots of features. (Although I did not set it up with a landline, so didn't test conference calling, switching lines, etc.)
Bad:
1) The phone automatically syncs with your skype contact list but does not indicate status, so you have to check the computer first to see if someone is online! For me, this was a deal breaker, as the whole idea of having a cordless skype phone was to get away from the computer.
2) If you accidentally answer a call on the computer, you can't hear or talk to the person, but you also can't use the phone -- it just says "skype in use" and won't pick up the call! Again, deal breaker.
3) You can't use skypeout to dial in a number -- you have to go to the computer, add the number to your contact list, and then select it from the phone. Major deal breaker.
4) You can change your skype status from the phone (to offline, away, etc.) but you have to negotiate 3 or 4 cryptic menus to get there. (Minor annoyance.)
5) And the last complaint is actually with all skype phones: Once installed, the skype app on the computer becomes useless unless you manually change the audio/microphone settings every time you want to switch between phone and computer. If you want to do a video call, you still have to use the phone to talk! Why doesn't Skype have an easy way of switching between profiles?
