Double Indemnity is a classic that needs no further elaboration from me except to say that Barbara Stanwyck puts in an unforgettable performance. there are millions of reviews of this classic
Lost Weekend was what I was after and this features Ray Milland as an alcoholic, a role he plays exceedingly well and this is one of the best films to deal with alcoholism along with 'Days of Wine and Roses' starring Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. Also featured in 'Lost Weekend' are Jane Wyman as the long suffering girlfriend, and a little bonus for me was Doris Dowling (Blue Dahlia) playing a bar room acquaintance. A well crafted film essential in a serious collection.
Major to Minor is the least convincing to me of this quartet. Ray Milland again stars, along with Ginger Rogers, in a lightweight piece about a girl who fakes her age to get a junior train ticket. On the train she meets Ray Milland playing an officer returning to military college. She has to maintain her schoolgirl image throughout this charade meeting his folks and the students at the college, which may amuse some. I like Ginger Rogers so it was bearable
Foreign Affair was a pleasant surprise. Here Jean Arthur features as a congress woman investigating the morale of the US troops occupying post war Berlin. Naturally the black market features and John Lund doea a good job as a US officer fraternising with Marlene Dietrich. I liked Jean Arthur in this, she is both amusing and attractive and makes the film. Marlene Dietrich is true to form as the night club singer and she sings one excellent song called 'Illusion' This film is also remarkable for the footage of Berlin after the carnage of the Allied bombing campaign.
