This film is certainly a strange one. It can clam a unique honour in being the first American western to be filmed in Israel. Gregory Peck is oddly cast as Arch Deans a grizzled and bearded old Scottish bandit. Maybe Sean Connery who was very miscast in another odd western "Shalako", would have actually been better in this film, and Peck more suitable to the latter. Peck is undoubtedly a fine actor, so quite what he is doing trying to conjure up a rather phony sounding Rob Roy Scottish accent is beyond me! Anyway back to the story. Dean's is accompanied by Billy Two Hats, a half breed played by Desi Arnaz jnr, in a botched bank robbery where there is an accidental killing. Billy is caught and then later rescued by Archie who is injured in the process. Whilst resting up at a ranch where Billy enjoys the sexual favours of the ranchers young wife, it allows an Indian hating sheriff played by Jack Warden to catch up. This leads to the inevitable showdown with bandits, a posse and just to add some extra spice a passel of renegade indians, or are they Israeli gypsies?
You feel for Desi Arnaz jnr, the son of Lucille Ball, who is clearly no actor and is foundering way out of his depth with Hollywood giant Peck. Just as well Peck was only going through the motions! Jack Warden is good as always in his Indian hating sheriff's role, and David Huddlestone provides his usual larger than life presence. There is the occasional good banter in the film that temporarily lifts it. On one occasion Arch is asked, "How many (Indians) do you think there are". He replies, "Four I think". He is then asked, "How do you know there's four". He replies, "I counted their feet and divided by four". But sadly that is a rare high point in this subdued and very downbeat film. It is unusual that is for sure, but it is not a good film. I tend to remember it only for the scene where a Sharps buffalo rifle is used to good effect. It can best be termed as a minor western of curiosity value. It is another film that has long been off the radar and difficult to obtain, so thanks to Optimum western classics once again for making this one available. Like all their no frills DVD's there are no extras, just the film. A fairly generous 3 stars.
