Review

A remarkable book...searchingly honest, and desperately sad at times. At others, it is genuinely very funny. Quite a feat. --Jon Henley, The Guardian, October 15, 2011

The most profoundly moving graphic novel I personally have ever read bar none. --Page 45, October 2011

This has a universal, empathetic appeal...it's a page turner...entertaining, original, thought provoking stuff. --Forbidden Planet International blog, October 25, 2011

It is not only harrowing and disturbing but acutely funny: A brilliant and original book that deserves a wide audience. --Darian Leader, author of The New Black

What's most remarkable is that it will make you laugh. And then there are moments that will tear your heart open.
--Herald Scotland, October 16, 2011

Product Description

Nicola Streeten's little boy, Billy, was two years old when he died following heart surgery for problems diagnosed only 10 days earlier. 13 years later, able to finally revisit a diary written at the time, Streeten began translating her notes into a graphic novel. The result, a gut-wrenchingly sad retrospective reflection from a 'healed' perspective, is an unforgettable portrayal of human responses to trauma.

Interacting with 25 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I cried deeply upon experiencing Nicola Streetons memoir - it is much more than a mere work of literature, or illustrated biography. As a parent suffering the loss of a teenage son 16 years ago, the raw emotions of my own still ongoing jouney were revisited profoundly and keenly as if yesterday but softened by the knowlege of shared experience. Savage wounds to the heart and soul slowly heal around the edges but scar tissue always remains. The book gives valuable insight to relatives, friends, acquaintances and even strangers about the maelstrom of emotions resulting from tragic death of loved ones. Nicola acutely observes the often fraught encounters with others, the misunderstandings from both parties and the fear and embarassment of people who are unable to express themselves when face to face with the bereaved. Written with pathos and a distinctive offbeat humour this should be compulsory reading for all.

Beautiful 11 May 2012
Format:Paperback
A beautiful dipiction of a life changing journey. The subject of birth and death is often restricted to those whom have experienced it. It helped me understand it a bit better and found I could relate to her emotions because of the authors frankness and honesty. This is the kind of story that needs to shared.

Panels - like peeping through windows onto the author's life.
I echo the above review. It seems there's a refreshing trend for the graphic memoir, especially subject matter centred on life's problems such as illness or grief. Read more

An autobiographical graphic 'novel'.
I am an avid consumer of all graphic novels, and I'm especially fond of biographical ones such as Harvey Pekar and Art Spiegelman. This book is up there with them. Read more
