I read this in an afternoon and enjoyed it so much I read it again the next day. The characters jump right off the page. This stage play from 1960 was made into a film and so much of it transferred over. The Billy character is a dreamer and often you see folk just like him on the bus or working in a shop. It might be 50 years on but the comedy and the zany behaviour is still just as entertaining. My favourite character is Gran with her pint pot of tea. Brilliant...

A great book, a great film and a great play. There's a bit of all of us in Billy Liar, especially if you are caught in a mind numbing job. Long may it run and run. It is a modern classic that ranks alongside 'Noises Off' and 'Lust In The Dust' by New Theatre Publications.
