Review

'a thrilling and moving story about a Chelsea footballer who gets caught up in the ravages of the Second World War, with the focus on the Beautiful Game as a common bond that can link nations and generations.’ Foreman's shimmering watercolours and line, so agile and expressive, are a perfect match for Morpurgo's assured and memorable narrative. This is a book that will be treasured by any child or teacher learning about the Second World War.' TES

Format:Hardcover
Like "Kensuke's Kingdom" Michael Morpurgo gently introduces his young readers to the horrors of World War II: this time through the eyes of a Chelsea Pensioner who was a crack player for Chelsea FC before joining up. Plenty of football for young fans but not too much. Moments of great joy mingle with episodes of great sadness; the illustrations by Michael Foreman are exquisite. My ten year old could not put it down.
Uplifting.

A wonderful book. 28 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I have just finisihed reading this book to my three children, aged 9,8 and 5 and they all sat engrossed throughout not wanting me to stop. It is the story of the life of a Chelsea Pensioner and takes us from his childhood, as a football mad Chelsea supporter, through his WWII service to the present day. The book tackles some difficult issues, such as the concentration camps, but it is done in such a way that even the youngest of my children had no difficulty in dealing with the story. It is a truly wonderful book which takes the reader through the highs and lows of Billy's life and makes you laugh and cry throughout. The illustrations are excellent and when I finished reading it the children went back to look at the pictures again and again. I cannot recommend this book too highly.

Billy The Kid 7 July 2006
Format:Paperback
This book was amazing! I really, really loved it. It was brilliantly written. I enjoyed it so much, even though I didn't think that I would. It is the moving story of a pensioner who fought in WW2, but had wanted to be a footballer.
