Product Description

Synopsis

Supremely successful...volatile, creative...a craftsman, a genius...self-aware and self-destructive, singer-songwriter Billy Joel's life reads like a popular novel. BILLY JOEL: THE LIFE & TIMES OF AN ANGRY YOUNG MAN takes an in-depth look at "the piano man," starting with his middle-class Long Island, NY childhood, and his years as a gang member and a working musician. With his breakthrough 1973 album Piano Man, Joel's story becomes one of unstoppable success. Bordowitz covers those heady days, as well as the turbulent business dealings and bad advice that have coloured his career. The book explores his big moments...including his inductions into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his shift from popular to classical composition, his move to Broadway, and it also examines his personal struggles with broken marriage and substance abuse. Based on numerous interviews, this biography gives a detailed picture of this deeply troubled man and his music.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing , 25 Jul 2006

Unfortunately the majority of the pages concern the lives and events of everyone around Billy Joel but not the great man himself. Also some of the research is baffling such as when Bordowitz mentions covers of "I love you just the way you are" he neglects to mention Barry White undoubtedly the best know cover version of the song. That's not even research for a music journalist it's common knowledge?

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, 5 Dec 2006

I have to say I was really looking forward to reading this book, but was left bitterly disappointed! Throughout the book, there were blatant, silly spelling errors and grammatical blunders. If I didn't know better, I would have thought that this book was not proof-read and if it was, then the proof reader needs to be giving me their job. I am by no means the most intelligent human on the planet, but even I picked out the errors at will! The content of the book was ok, but to be honest, in typical unauthorised fashion, was really only littered with quotes made by people in open press and television and in my opinion, concentrated a little too much on other musicians from the same era as Billy. I accept a background was necessary to set the scene, but at times it was tedious reading. All in all, I got myself hyped up for this book unnecessarily.

2.0 out of 5 stars shades of grey, 12 Sep 2007

Not the page turner i so wanted it to be.The fact it took me months to finish it says it all.I felt a duty to carry on after putting it down through sheer boredom. It's very much rent a quote, learning little about the great man himself.Perhaps the problem lies in the fact that nobody from billy's camp will talk to journalists' through fear or just out of loyalty, so what you get is scraps of info that most fans know already. This isn't a bad book but it's not very good either.I just wanted more out of it.Reading you never get a sense of the real Billy, the genius behind the music.Maybe you will only ever get to know the man through his music and this could just be a case of music speaks louder than words!!!
