From Amazon.co.uk

The visual companion to his compilation album, The Ultimate Collection provides an exhaustive view of Billy Joel's video output to date. Rather frustratingly compiled with little or no reference to chronology, the collection is still a fine overview of this underrated, US songwriter. His material from the 1970s may be represented by some now-dated visuals (far too many moustaches and skinny ties) but still ranks as some of the best of his career. Be aware, however, that "Leave a Tender Moment Alone", "New York State of Mind" and the classic "Piano Man" are all live versions, with the latter especially replacing the subtlety of the original with a stadium-friendly, slow-motion rock treatment. All was to change in 1983 with the mildly annoying "Uptown Girl": the budgets got bigger as the records sold more, yet the frequent attempts to present the less-than photogenic Joel in a pop-star light are not that successful. Musically, however, he was still able to produce the goods, especially on the likes of "All About Soul", "The River of Dreams" and the infectious "Tell Her About It". And with "Allentown" and "Goodnight Saigon" he proved himself to be a chronicler of blue-collar America more than capable of matching the Springsteens and Mellancamps.

On the DVD: Picture and sound quality is excellent, the latter available in PCM stereo or sumptuous Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. Extras include an audio enhanced discography and a biographical timeline, enabling the viewer to pinpoint how Joel made the transition from the decidedly dodgy rock of the Hassles to the elegant AOR of later years.--Phil Udell

4.0 out of 5 stars Remember the 70s and 80s 23 Nov 2001
By Mr. Dk Hamm VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
I can understand that this may not be everyone's cup of tea but if, like me, you remember the 70s and 80s, you can't help but remember the songs of Billy Joel. Come on, there must be at least one song of his you like!
Obviously, all the hits are here, including Uptown Girl, Just the way you are (as covered by Murph and the Magictones in The Blues Brothers), Piano Man and Tell Her About It and all the rest. There are some lesser known hits such as You May Be Right and Honesty (maybe they were bigger in the States, I don't know).
Not musical perfection but if you want to relax for 110 minutes, there is no better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Than The US Version!! 11 Feb 2004
Format:DVD
Put simply, US fans got the short end of the stick on this one. The imported counterpart of this release, entitled "The Ultimate Video Collection" (seen here), covers more of Billy's career than does "The Essential Video Collection". While it doesn't have "Keepin' The Faith" or "Los Angelenos", it has adds some of his more recent videos, such as: "New York State of Mind (Live), "The River of Dreams", "I Go To Extremes", "The Downeaster Alexa", "We Didn't Start The Fire" and "All About Soul". The bad news is, it's the same 5.1 mix that's on his "Greatest Video Hits Vol III". Compared with the audio mix in his other videos, the aforementioned ones lack surround sound. My other problem with this release is that the original, B&W version of "Piano Man" was not included. The video I enjoy the most is "Baby Grand". You could really tell Billy is a well-seasoned musician in this one. I also like the fact, that the string section can be clearly heard. This is a different studio take from the version on "The Bridge". In fact, I 'm not even sure they included the string section on that one. "That's soup, dejour, baby!" If you read my previous review for this, you'll note that I had quite a few humorous observations regarding Billy's interesting antics and choice of wardrobe in some of his older videos, such as "It's Still Rock & Roll To Me" and "You May Be Right". But, to be fair, those were the 80's and music videos were still a new concept. So, we'll forgive Billy for having absolutely no clue as to what he should be doing, or in this case not doing while singing. (Drinking beer? Convulsing?) O.K., enough of that. I do want to include one thing from my last review, though, for you psychadelic Billy Joel fans. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Joel at his best 26 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
There is absolutely no doubt that this DVD has to be bought by everybody who is just slightly interested in music. Billy Joel was, is and will ever be probably the greatest pop star in the world, because he's none of those who just go out and perfrm, he plays the piano like no one else, he writes his songs and the lyrics himself and this DVD shows off the sheer class of this man. JUST BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Billy Joel's Video Jewels. 3 May 2012
By Malcolm TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Billy Joel's "River of Dreams" tour in 2010 was his last
of the Pop/Rock genre tours. Billy now 62, is concentrating
on a more classical style of composition without words, a
piano man, composing purely for piano rather than for vocals.

That being the case, a DVD which creates the atmosphere
of Billy's concerts and comprises some of the best videos
of his major hits seems an ideal way to remember this great
singer, balladeer and piano man extraordinaire.

Billy Joel - The Ultimate Collection gives us 26 tracks of
great songs, Piano Man, The River of Dreams, We Didn't Start
The Fire, The Longest Time, Honesty, Uptown Girl, Goodnight
Saigon, Leningrad, New York State of Mind and many more
favourites are there.

If you already have The Ultimate Collection on CD, then this
DVD, whilst not as inclusive as the CD, (the CD has 36 tracks
the DVD 26)will bring back the atmosphere of Billy's unique
tour concerts several of which I enjoyed.

This DVD is well worth buying, my copy cost under a Fiver !

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid in Sound and Video Quality 14 April 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I'm a collector of 80s videos, and most of the time the Videos from 80s are in very bad condition, even on DVDs (sometimes even VHS rips). Here not, Audio is LPCM 32 Bit as well as 16bit AC3 5.1 with 448kbit Datarate!!! What else could you wish from a DVD? PERFECT!

I purchased this because I like Joels music, but mostly it was very cheap available at Marketplace. Now I have to say, it is one of my favourite DVDs I have in my collection. Really amazed by the quality given, and 26 videos is really great.

YOU HAVE TO BUY IT!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Billy
I really like Billy Joel but this Video is ok but not him at his best; the set scenes are from his early stuff and therefore dated to that time.
