Product Description

From the Publisher

This is a feel-good children's book written purely with young Arsenal supporters in mind. The book has been beautifully illustrated by Debbie Mitchell and makes excellent bedtime reading for all young Arsenal fans.

From the Author

As an Arsenal supporter for almost 40 years the memory of my first Arsenal game in the early 70's (a 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City) remains fresh in my memory. I can't recall the 2nd or 3rd game I saw or even the 100th but the first was a special occasion for me and, I suspect, for all Arsenal fans. In writing Billy Gooner's First Match I wanted to try and recapture some of the excitement of such an occasion for a young fan whilst, at the same time, trying to fill a void in the Arsenal-related book market where, I feel, young supporters are not well catered for. I hope that I have managed to achieve both these objectives.

This book was bought with my Grandson in mind, he's still too young for it currently but you can never start them early enough can you? Having said that, and of course having read the book I was taken back to my first attendance at a football match, the walk to the ground, the street sellers and the huge anticipation about the game itself. My son, on being allowed to read it, then said it reminded him so much of his first trip (with me of course) sparking memories of "being allowed to walk in the road" because of the crowds you understand, the smell of the hotdogs and police horse's "as high as a house". All in all a marvellous book and one that has the ability to involve the reader in a similar way to which "Fever Pitch" has for older readers.
I would recommend this for those youngsters being taken to the match, whether it's their first or one of many, as it will strike a chord for all and help live or relive the atmosphere that is so special at football matches, the atmosphere that you do not get when watching matches on the television.

I bought this for my grandson who is 7 years old and an avid Arsenal fan! As it is a christmas present he has yet to read it but I have read it and I know he will enjoy it. It is well written for the young reader by Arsenal fan Greg Adams, based on his own experience as a youngster going to see his first arsenal match. Because it is set in 1976 there is an insight into Arsenal's history at Highbury and mentions some of the players in the team at that time. The book is very well illustrated by Debbie Mitchell adding authenticity to the story. This is an excellent book for young Arsenal fans to read alone or with their Dads! I suspect my Grandson will read it to his little sister. Would also be a good book choice for any youngsters who love football but have no affiliation to a particular team - they will all relate to the story. Throughout the book there is the element of anticipation and excitement of going to see your first match. I would highly recommend it and would love to see more stories.
