Reviews

Billy Connolly takes the ultimate road trip as he travels the world’s most famous highway, Route 66, Billy turns Easy Rider and follows a lifelong dream as he makes the iconic 2488 mile journey from Chicago to Santa Monica. With his unrivalled ability to tell a great story, he brings to life both the big and small moments of American history: the world changing events and the comic asides.

Billy says: “Travelling Route 66 has always been a lifelong ambition - It brings together some of my favourite things - my trike, my banjo and America. The ultimate road trip”.

On his way, Billy will meet disciples of Route 66, from seasoned “roadies” to first-timers living the dream. And he won’t just be passing through: anything could happen on the way...

Includes over 40mins of exclusive, never been seen before, DVD extras - featuring Billy’s video diary from his road trip.

Fabulous dvd, My husband and I watched the series on ITV 1 thought it was excellent must watch TV, we can't wait to watch it again without the comercial breaks that rudely interupt your viewing. I have been a fan of Billy Connolly since I was at school I have watched all of his journey's he has made around Austrailia, New Zeland, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and his journey to the edge of the world. I now have them all on dvd so that I can enjoy them again and again, I think he gets to the heart of where ever he is visiting and makes it so interesting and funny his view on the world is fabulous, Would recommend this dvd to all FAN's.

I travelled the whole of Route 66 at the same time Billy Connelly was filming it so I was really looking forward to the series as I loved the journey.

However, I can only say the series disappointed me. For a start, if one disregards the adverts the total running time is about three hours and one cannot even begin to do justice to this amazing road in that time.

Many of the great scenes along the route seemed just to flash by with hardly a mention and some of the chats he had with people were, in my opinion, too long and not relevant and I think the detour to Monument Valley in a programme that did not have a lot of time for its actual subject, struck me as odd, albeit that Monument Valley is incredible.

Furthermore, I felt that far more needed to be said about the Route's history ,how it came about, what is must have been like to have travelled on it in the early days and how the road has fared and changed
over the years. I was pleased to see that the revival that started in Seligman, Arizona was mentioned at reasonable length.

I did, of course enjoy seeing some of the sights I had seen on my own journey and I agree with Billy Connelly's views on the great city of Chicago.

I would advise anyone who enjoys travelling to try the Route 66 journey but the series could have been a lot better. More time devoted to the subject rather than four rather short programmes would have helped greatly.

Reaction to this superb series depends in my view how you feel about the 'Big Yin'. Those who love him (and there are many) will thoroughly enjoy but is there not just on much of Connolly in a documentary that is supposed to be focused on the sublime mother road ?
The selection of sites cannot be faulted, the photography of the highest standard (the sight of the stars above Monument Valley worth the price of the series on its own) the wonderful trike he rides the length of the road a joy to behold but why oh why does Connolly feel it necessary to appear in virtually every shot trying just a little to hard to be a 'personality'? His laugh begins to grate on the nerves. This day and age everything has to be celebrity driven. I suppose to sell the darn thing. Route 66 sells itself to the dreamer in us all. A wonderful series that we are lucky to have available. I thoroughly recommend it with a health warning.

A fantastic travel documentary presented by the Big Yin himself Billy Connolly. In his epic road trip he travels the Legendary Route 66 between Chicago and Los Angeles and visit's the sights and people inbetween.

I must admit I really enjoyed this series when I watched it on ITV One, the music in the series is fantastic and you can really sense Billy's enthusiasm for the Americana culture on the road.

My Particular highlights of his trip are The Willis Tower in Chicago, The Cave Hotel room and The Grand Canyon.

If you enjoyed this I would recommend 'Stephen Fry In America' which is similar but exploring a different side of American culture.

My wife and I drove Route 66 for our honeymoon in August 2011 and it was an amazing trip. We totally agree with Billy's views on Chicago and many of the other places we saw. The series brought back so many excellent memories yet disappointed us as we missed some items on the route but it has made us want to go back and do it all again and see some of the amazing places we missed on our 2 1/2 week journey.

We would highly recommend the DVD for ideas and memories, and you really should give the route a go. We're not super rich... we're in our 20s and had an awesome time on a budget as we didnt need to spend loads of cash on attractions or hotels - the historic and cheap motels are the place to be!!! We can't wait to save up and go for an anniversary in the future!

I actually missed the first episode but watched the rest, and this is truly a brilliant series. And what better man to go on this journey with than Billy Connolly, he starts from Chicago all the way to Los Angeles. It shows off the beauty of what America truly is, he gets to meet various locals along the way. I highly recommend watching this as this will make up the dream of travelling through the American highway, if you don't have the money or time to do it yourself. So I suggest buying this, and going on a spectacular journey with a true legend!

When Bill Connolly travels along the legendary Route 66, he does it with humor and some great stories.

I know that Route 66 has a lot to offer, and it will be a very long dvd if he visit all of the highlights. It is a 4 episode of 45 min each. I think that it would have been much better if they had made it into 8 episodes instead. There is a lot of great places we dont see..

But still.. It's not so bad at all.. I will certainly recommend that you guys buy this dvd, from this great comedian, and enjoy!
It brings you great info if you're planning to travel The Route 66. I'm going to follow his footprints in about 7 days from now ;-)
