DVD Description

Billy's going to the edge of the world and he's taking us with him. In the summer of 2008 Billy Connolly set sail on a 10-week journey from ocean to ocean, from the Atlantic to the Pacific by way of the North West Passage. This legendary route deep within the Arctic Circle has thwarted explorers and fortune-hunters for centures and now you can experience Billy Connolly's adventure on DVD.

This series is currently airing on ITV in the UK, and I am very impressed with it. Billy demonstrates a love of difference, considering 'quirky' to be beauty. It shows some of the diverse cultures, areas, climate and people that are part of that great country of Canada, which is stunningly beautiful.

Billy is his energetic self, but there is none of the explicit language that generally goes with the stage gigs. (I don't know if the DVD will prove different to the TV, but I wouldn't have thought so, as it is more of a documentary.)

If you like the commentary on the history and culture that Billy has offered in his other series, and are interested in Canada and the specific Northwest Passage trail he is on, then this will not disappoint.

My view of the DVD is coloured by two facts - I know most of the area covered very well, and I worked on the film for two days at Telegraph Creek. The downside to that perspective is that I see that there are many shots placed out of order in the film, and that's primarily why I gave the DVD 4 stars instead of 5. The upside of my perspective is that having worked closely with Billy I see how well both the country and his character come across in the film. Contrary to what I've seen in other reviews, Billy loves people, and that came across in the time I spent with him, and in the film.

The film shows Billy travelling the way I like to - seeing the world in detail. Although we only get to meet a small sampling of the people he met, and to experience a small sampling of the places he saw, what we do get to see has been beautifully recorded - beautiful not only in the scenic sense but in the spiritual sense. What we see in the film truly is Billy at his best, and northern Canada at its best. My lasting memory of Billy will be seeing him in front of his tiny cabin in the middle of nowhere, all alone, smoking a cigar and savouring the incredible view - that's the Billy that you'll get to meet in this film.

Absolutely Amazing! 16 Aug 2010
The 2-disc DVD set is absolutely amazing! Let's face it, how many of us can/will afford the time, money and will to undertake a cross-country journey across the Artic Sea? Billy Connolly shows us the great beauty of the Canadian wilderness. The great scenery footage with spunky country music lets us experience in great details, Inuit, First Nation and settler cultures such as throat singing, seal hunting, camp sauna, moose hunting, bear tracking, whale sighting etc. He brings us images of bare, cold, rugged landscapes where we would probably not make the trip! You can feel the warm hospitality of Inuit, First Nation and settlers in the Canada's north in the video and sympathize with them as they continue to preserve their tranquil and simple lifestyles despite the rapid pace of modernization of Canada's urban cities. Highly recommended!
