Product Description

Product Description

Billy Bremner is a football icon. During his years playing for Leeds Utd and Scotland his passion for the game and his commitment to the cause made him an all-time footballing legend. When Billy Bremner died in 1997 at the age of just 55, Paul Harrison was working with him on a definitive biography. They had completed extensive no-holds-barred one-to-one interviews covering Bremner's distinguished career as a player and manager. With Bremner's untimely death the book was never published but, now, Paul Harrison has reworked the original material into the definitive biography. With contributions from many of the greats of the game, including Sir Alex Ferguson, Franz Beckenbauer, Ian St John, Kevin Keegan, Jimmy Greaves and late contemporaries such as Brian Clough, Don Revie, George Best and Sir Bobby Robson, Billy Bremner: Keep Fighting tells the story of Bremner's life both in his own words and those of the author and the distinguished contributors. Packed full of stories, anecdotes and reminiscences, this is a fitting tribute to one of the greats of the game.

Having read just about everything that has been penned on Leeds United FC, I feel justified in being qualified to be able to state that this is THE book every fan of Leeds United will want to read. Billy is perhaps our greatest ever player, the previous book on his football life was uninspiring and lacked the passion we all knew he had. This book claims to be the definitive account, it certainly lives up to that, with the author expertly reproducing interviews and supplementing these with personal and detailed knowledge of Billy's illustrious career. It's not for the faint hearted, Billy recalls it as it was, he speak honestly and openly about Leeds United and his beloved Scotland, his sheer passion and desire to win and achieve shines through this work like the beacon he was. It makes compelling reading. Not only that, there are copious testimonials from the world's greatest and most influential football people of Billy's era, most notably: Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Don Revie himself. There is much new material in the book, including, for the first time, a 'real' insight into Brian Clough's tenure at Leeds, Billy's thoughts on the various (dodgy) refereeing decisions that cost the club so dearly, Football Association disciplinary committee hearings, plus some of the antics he and his peers got up to while on Scotland International duty - to name just a few.

To be honest, if there is one book every football supporter of the 'Super Leeds' era should read, its definitely this one. It's filled with drama, laughs and tears, as the author and Billy take you through a wonderful life and career. Unsurprisingly with the author being a lifelong fan, it is Leeds biased, but not to the extent that issues are ignored or glossed over. It meets them head on and doesn't fail to deliver. For those who savour them, there is every possible statistic you could want to know (without falling asleep) on Billy's playing career, right down to what shirt number he wore and how many times he wore it! You have got to buy it and read it.

Poor 19 Jun 2011
This is not the definitive biography - It is poorly written with a lack of detail that is unforgivable - It is as if it is written from newspaper cuttings.
An example - It is not mentioned when Alan Clarke joined Leeds - Nor what BBs relationship was with him - This applies to numerous players.
I only read biographies - This is the worst one I have read.

Billy Bremner was probably the most important British footballer over a 10 year period - so this book, which claims to be the definitive account of his life, I was hoping would have answered many questions. How did he feel when Don Revie passed away? What was his marriage like? What did his children do? What do they feel about their legendary father? What was Billy's private life like? None of these really get a mention. The book is well written, but reads as yet another history of Revie's brilliant side - and could well be the biography of any of the other players from that particular team. Bernard Bale's earlier book on Bremner was criticised as being too brief. This merely follows the same pattern. For example, a considerable section is given over to other players' views of Billy - identical to the format in Bale's book. The story of the toffee apple stealing occurs in both books. There are other incidents of repetition. Many chunky and unjustified biographies of mediocre players litter the shelves of Waterstones: Tommy Smith, Alan Mullery et al., with great detail and comprehensive coverage. Billy Bremner was a world class footballer and a massive influence on the modern game, revered across the globe, and we have had to wait 11 years for this second biography to come out. It is just all right. I wait with baited breath for third time lucky.
