"O'Clery turns his prodigious research and mastery of sometimes intricate detail into a tight, pacy, crystal-clear narrative. An epic tale" --Irish Times

Product Description
This work describes the curious life of the secretive Irish-American billionaire who is trying to give all his money away before he dies (it's harder than you think...). Chuck Feeney was born in New Jersey to an Irish-American family struggling to make their way in the fiercest years of the Depression. In 1997, he called Judith Miller of the "New York Times" to correct a widely reported fact. He was not, as "Forbes" and others alleged, one of the 400 richest Americans. He was worth a relatively modest $2 million. He had been a billionaire however, but since 1984 he'd been quietly giving his money away, without fanfare or recognition. Now, in 1997, he was determined to wrap up his philanthropic efforts before he died. But in actual fact that meant having to get rid of $3.5 billion, because the fund that he had endowed was one of the richest and most secretive of all the great philanthropic trusts: Chuck Feeney was the money and brains behind the Atlantic Foundation. This authorized but not approved biography of one of the world's richest and most secretive donors tells the story of how Chuck Feeney made his millions - buying and selling in post second world war Europe and Asia - and how he spent them, giving to causes around the world as various as hospitals in Vietnam and, controversially, Sinn Fein. More than a story of an extraordinarily gifted and fortunate entrepreneur, it's the tale of what happens to a man and his family when confronted with wealth beyond imagining, and how Feeney could come to make the decision to get rid of almost all of it. It isn't easy to give away $3.5 billion in good conscience. That much money requires a lot of due diligence; and money has the habit of attracting money. As fast as Chuck Feeney tried to deplete the foundation he found its funds were growing through its investments. At the time of writing, the Atlantic Foundation remains one of the wealthiest and most secretive, and Chuck Feeney is as busy today as he was a decade ago trying to give the money away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Unique, 7 Oct 2007
By sylvia Beijing (Beijing, China) - See all my reviews
It is rare if not totally unique to read a biography of a self made billionaire who decides in the prime of his life to anonymously give it all away to causes that truly make a difference: education, care of the elderly, global health and human rights and who at the same time was the secret financial backer of the seemingly impossible peace process in Northern Ireland. He had only one condition and that was that his name was never to be mentioned. For him the joy of giving was enough. In one case, the directors of the Da Nang Hospital in Vietnam were so obsessed with giving Chuck Feeney recognition, they had the six story medical building painted in green to honour Feeney's Irish heritage!
This book that could also be entitled The Power of One, was meticulously researched by one of Ireland's most distinguished journalists, Conor O'Clery who, at his own expense, followed the Chuck Feeney trail wherever the philanthropist made his donations. Over a time of 2 years Mr O'Clery, in his quest for authenticity, left no stone unturned in visiting every country that benefited from Mr Feeney's Atlantic Philanthropies. He interviewed family members, former partners, colleagues, friends and foes alike to give us this very readable account of this very unusual man who owns neither house not car. He gives us a detailed and fascinating account of how the fortune was made and in the process we learn a lot about the workings of Duty Free Shoppers, the world's largest duty-free chain; which in itself is an amazing story and the source of Feeney's immense wealth.
Feeney truly embodies the idea that the power of one individual can change the world.
Today as we read and hear of so much greed and excess it is truly heartwarming to have this biography of such a decent, truly good person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insights into a unique life, 8 May 2008
I never heard of Chuck Feeney before reading this book, and the story is told in a methodical and entertaining fashion. The writer does not only highlight the glory of Chuck, but also runs through some of the personal challenges (failings?) of the great man. A fantastic insight, and a recommended read for all entrepreneurs and people of wealth.
