Book Description

Book 1 of Cowboys & Brides

From New York Times and USA Today-bestselling author Carolyn Brown comes a contemporary Western romance filled to the brim with sexy cowboys, gutsy heroines, and genuine down-home Texas twang.

Colton Nelson was twenty-eight years old when he won the Texas Lottery and went from ranch hand to ranch owner overnight. Now he's desperate to keep the gold diggers away. It shouldn't be too hard to find a pretty girl and hire her to pretend to be his one-and-only.

Laura Baker's got mixed feelings about this-she's on the ranch to work, not to be arm candy. On the other hand, being stuck for a while in the boondocks with a gorgeous cowboy isn't half-bad.
What neither Colton nor Laura expects are the intensely hard lessons they have to learn about the real cost of love...

Fans of Linda Lael Miller and Diana Palmer will thrill to this moving story of a marriage of convenience between a cowboy who has it all...and the woman he could never have enough of.

I'm in love with the Spikes & Spurs series. The women are all feisty and the men are sometimes stubborn but always sexy. Carolyn Brown will have you giggling in places, ready to cry or want to reach in and shake someone and say "what are you doing". Her writing style just put you right in the middle of the story from the frist page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cowboys, small town, & Romance= great read! 10 Jun. 2013
By Heather BookSavvyBabe - Published on
    Format:Mass Market Paperback
There's just something about cowboys. They work hard and they have a rugged appeal that attracts me to their stories. Billion Dollar Cowboy is a small-town, cowboy romance story that I fully enjoyed and had me adding more of Carolyn Brown's books to my want-to-read list.

I know that billionaires are all the rage recently, but Colton is not your ordinary contemporary romance billionaire. Colton was a ranch hand who won the lottery and despite his new wealthy status, he works very hard at his ranch in a very small town in Texas. Colton's wealth attracts women who want him for all the wrong reasons and he has developed some serious trust issues. When Laura comes to the ranch to work as an assistant for Andy, Colton's friend and financial advisor. Colton is uncertain of Laura's motivations but Laura is only on the farm to work off her debt to Andy. To stave off the gold-digging women, Laura agrees to a fake relationship with Colton. As time goes by, the relationship feels less fake and more real.

I really enjoyed Billion Dollar Cowboy. I connected with the characters easily and fell right into their story. I like that Colton maintained his hard-working status, he didn't ditch his friends, family, and way of life just because he came into money. He was slow to accept that Laura was not out for his money, his trust issues run deep. As for Laura, she had a lot of issues to work out. Laura had a tough time separating from her sister, the cause for her debt. It took Laura awhile to accept that she did not always have to pick up her sister's slack.

I believed the relationship between Colton and Laura. They did not have an insta-love moment. It took them both time to get to know each other and to open up. Laura especially had a hard time figuring out what was real about their relationship and what was for show.

After reading Billion Dollar Cowboy, I am very eager to read more of Carolyn Brown's work. She writes cowboys and the country setting really well. For readers who enjoy cowboy romances, I definitely recommend reading Billion Dollar Cowboy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Billion Dollar Cowboy, A Review for the Blog Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and Fantasy 7 Jun. 2013
    By Shauni - Published on
    Format:Mass Market Paperback
Carolyn Brown starts her new series Cowboys and Brides off with a wonderfully sweet story of finding true love in spite of life. Billion Dollar Cowboy takes that what if you win the lottery question and turns it into an excellent story.

Laura Baker is the responsable sister. Even though she is younger something happened on the day they found out that social services was going to seperate them. She found her fight.. and no one was going to take her sister away from her. Through out the rest of their lives Laura protected and Janet screwed up. Now things are tough and Laura can not help her. Janet needs money to pay gambling debts and Laura who has just lost her job can not figure out a way to help her. Until she calls in a favor to the only cousin she has contact with. He agrees to help her but on his terms and they are tough... No contact with Janet, whatsoever, Janet goes to GA and Laura goes to work for him..

Colton Nelson was 28 when he won the Texas Lottery.. I just loved that line from the description so I sorta stole.. um borrowed it.. Colton Nelson is an everyday man who now has the ability to live the life he dreamed. Going from Cowboy to Rancher with one lucky payout. It doesn't hurt that his best friend and financial advisor is brilliant and has turned his million dollar payout into a billion dollars. It gives him the ability to support his family and be the man he wants to be. What he doesn't want to be is harassed and harangued by the female population.

When Laura comes to work for his financial advisor, his family puts together a scheme that throws the two of them together forcing them to get to know each other on an honest level and to learn what real love is. Laura has some surprising help from her sister Janet who comes across as the hard edged gambler she is and yet she does love her sister.. Colton on the other hand has a rather quirky cast of characters that he calls family and it's wonderful to see them want to protect him but still want him to have a real life with real love.

A wonderful beginning to this series and I can't wait to read more about these Cowboys and their Brides..

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Start to a New Contemporary Western Romance Series 1 July 2013
By Sophia Rose - Published on
    Format:Kindle Edition
Reading this story was like reading a modern fairytale in many ways. There were several improbably aspects to it, but I just went with it when I treated it like a romance painted with a soft colors and brushes over the canvas like impressionist art rather than has bold realism in contemporary romance.

Its the story of an ordinary cowhand, Colton Nelson, that strikes it rich winning the lotto and then richer through investments. He just wants to live his life simply and quietly on his ranch with his adopted family all around him, but unfortunately his new bank account figures have all the ladies salivating to become Mrs. Nelson, the billionaire cowboy's wife.

His good friend, Andy Jo, has a solution to the problem for him. Andy Jo has hired his cousin a few times removed, Laura Baker, to be his assistant in a special arrangement. Andy paid off her sister's gambling debt to a loan shark and now she's paying it back by work as his assistant to pay off the loan. Andy's plan is to use Laura to pretend to be Colton's girlfriend.

The family is all in on it and Laura agrees because Andy allows her to bend one of his rules regarding her sister. Colton and Laura enter into the act and things are going well until things get real. Unfortunately, Colton wants nothing to do with the 'love word and Laura can barely say 'commitment' let alone feel she can manage it. There is also a little suspicion on Colton's part that Laura is just playing a deep game to get her hands on his money. As they continue along fooling everyone else with their mock relationship, they both realize that they can't fool themselves. Laura's time on the ranch is coming to an end and she plans to walk if Colton won't give her the one thing that will make her stay.

As I said before, this has qualities to it that are parts fairy tale, parts sweet romance and a few other things thrown in for good measure. The hero is rich, but it has a small town romance feel to it. The pace on this one took its time which was fine, but I admit there were a few moments when I just wanted the story to move it along a bit faster. The transitions between scenes was a bit choppy, but other than mildly distracting, it wasn't too bad.

All the characters were well written and I enjoyed getting to know each one. I liked how the story switched to various characters perspectives though mostly the two main characters of course. Laura and Colton got on my nerves a bit with their insecurities and denial that what they had was the real thing and not just some fake relationship or that they were good in the sack. They were both passionate people and the scenes included sex, but it didn't get graphic. There was one character (who will remain nameless because of spoiler issues) that threw me off because what was described in most of the book didn't jive with what came later. There was a sudden change and while I was glad for it; in truth, personalities don't go through that drastic of a change like that.

All in all, it was an enjoyable Contemporary Western Romance that those who tend to enjoy their romance on the sweeter side will enjoy.

Thank you to Net Galley for providing my reading copy for review purposes.

    4.0 out of 5 stars CAN'T WAIT FOR BOOK 2!! 19 Jun. 2013

Beautifully written love story. Laura is always bailing her sister out - this time she is working at a ranch to pay off her gambling debt. Little did she know she would be the one gambling on love. Colton is a strong man who value integrity, truth and family. He just happens to be a billionaire. His billionaire status does not make finding a lady friend easy. So his family and friends take matters into their on hands.

This book has some beautiful one liners and interesting dialogue between Laura and Colton. Brown does an excellent job of making all the characters in this book come to life. You will fall in love with Aunt Maudie, relate to Roxie, and become exceedingly frustrated with Andy Joe's manipulative streak - even though he is trying to do what is right. Then there is independent and strong Laura who is a self proclaimed computer geek, but who also doesn't mind getting dirty on the ranch. Colton the type of man you wish you could trade your husband for - smart, hardworking, sensitive and sexy. At times, the book is a little wordy and I actually did some skip, skip, skipping to get back to Laura and Colton. This book does pack a punch in the language department and some of the love scenes. However, overall it is a delightful "Cinderella-ish" story with loveable characters. Can't wait for book 2!!

    RATING: 4

I looked forward to reading this book based on the blurb on the cover and description on Amazon. I began the book and by end of first chapter was sorely disappointed. It only got worse. The heroine was childish at times and her vocabulary was too full of cuss words. True, once in a while, a good cuss word is needed in a scene, but this was beyond what was needed. The hero was not drawn as someone who I would want to spend more than five minutes with. I think in an attempt to appear country and 'down home' even with a billion in the bank, it went too far and made the characters seem to be caricatures of what down to earth country folks really are like. The story went on and on and should have ended much sooner than it did. This was a total disappointment from beginning to end and I expected so much better from it and its author.
