Product Description

Product Description

The Billingham Hadley small camera bag feature the quick release system to which we have added solid brass buckles. The QRS allows you to open and close the bag quickly and securely and the buckles allow you to fine tune the fit of the front pockets. For instance, if you have really packed in some bulky gear into one front pocket, you can just let out that side’s buckle to suit. Other common features across the range are a padded inner lid over the main compartment to help keep out rain or snow and a sculpted main flap which protect the bags contents from adverse weather conditions.

All the Hadleys have a secondary stud fitted to both front pockets’ top outer corner which can be used to increase or reduce their capacity when closed it forms a perfect place to clip pens, pencils, etc. Because it is relatively compact, we have made the Digital compatible with the optional AVEA Pockets so when you need more room it can simply be added. The AVEA Pockets also fit the Hadley Pro, which has the distinction of a comfortable and tough top fixed handle.

Every Hadley features a removable padded insert with adjustable partitions and an integral flap, held in position with Velcro touch fastener strips. If you want to stack your kit, you can use more dividers. The whole insert can be detached by a single press stud, to transform the Hadley into an understated, stylish travel or work bag.

I've been wanting a Billingham Hadley for a couple of years now, though could never really justify or afford the price of them compared to a normal cheaper bag.

I've gone through a few camera bags, but have finally brought a Billingham.

My past bags have been..
Acme Made Union Kit Messenger Shoulder Bag - Brought here on Amazon for £20 odd.
Manfrotto MB Stile Unica - brought for around £10
I've used Billingham padding boxes and using that in rucksacks etc.

Just to let you all know, I have a M43 camera set up. OM-D EM-5 / 25mm 1.4 / 75mm 1.8 / 45mm 1.8 / 12-35mm 2.8 / 7-14 4 / FL600R flash, handgrip, along with all the other bits and bobs such as batteries/SD cards/filters.

Firstly, I will go through my differences between the Hadley Small compared to the Hadley Pro, which I also ordered, though returned, which I will go into why.

Having them both in front of me, the Pro is of a standard messenger bag/laptop size. The Hadley Small is about 7cm's narrower in width, fits nicely on the small of the back if you wear it behind you, which I do. I felt the size of the Pro was a bit too big, though I actually loved it, I felt the size of the Small was perfect size for what I intend to bring on days out. If I was planning a big shoot, I would definitely consider the Pro over the Small.

With the Pro, I can basically fit everything mentioned above in 2/3rds of the inside of the bag, with a few bits in the front 2 pockets, but not so that the front pockets are bulging, basically a couple batteries and my handgrip, but that's all. Still had plenty of room inside for anything other than camera equipment that I would want, wallet/keys/water etc. A great day out bag.

Let's face it, this is a very expensive bag, and while I do like the bag very much, it is questionable whether it really is worth the high price.

As someone who has been through the route of buying countless bags, rucksacks, waistbelts and clip-on arrangements to hold my modest camera gear, and been frustrated with them all, I finally took the plunge and went for the highly rated Billingham.

If you are considering this bag, you probably already know about it, and have looked at reviews here, elsewhere and videos of it, so I wont dwell on the product aspects and more on the stuff that may not be so obvious.

Its quite small! Well, it is called the Hadley Small, somehow the video reviews I saw of it made it seem larger. The inner padded pouch is far too thick for a bag of this size, and wastes space. Sure we want padding but it is near 1cm thick, and as the bag material itself is pretty sturdy, a thinner padded material would be far more suitable for the size of the bag. The upshot of this is the remaining actual carry space inside is no more than a wide slot. Although its a flexible and accommodating space, it just strikes me that the attention to detail on the construction could be matched with that of the design.

The Sage Green is pleasant, but somewhat darker than in the images of it. The strap is ok, but for this price they really could have included a padded shoulder strap rather than wanting a hefty £30 extra for it.
The FibreNyte material is great, looks and feels pretty much like a natural material. It has flexibility without being floppy.

It is a mini Tardis though, as you will see in video reviews, it seems to swallow up far more than one would think it could, and without bulging out and looking mishapen.

Great compact bag. Very well made. I use it to carry a Fuji XT-1 with 10-24mm lens attached + 56mm lens + 35mm lens + lens hoods + EF-X20 flash + spare batteries and memory cards and bits and pieces. Everything fits comfortably but there is no room for anything else of significance. It suits me very well and is perfect for travel and days out. It's also comfortable to carry.

The irony is I tried to cancel my order because I didn't think it would be big enough for my needs but thank goodness it was too late for my cancellation to be accepted.

An excellent bag. Used with an Olympus Om-D E-M1 system. Amazed at how much can fit comfortably into it. Highly recommended.

Billingham bags are known for their quality - yes they are expensive - but you could go through 3 or 4 camera bags, which would basically cost the same as one billingham hadley small.

I've only had it for 1 day, but here are my thoughts:

I use this bag with a Canon 60D with a 17-55mm lens and the lens hood attached. Fits a treat... plus room in the back for my iPad 2 too.. (just about)..

You can also take the entire padding insert out and use the bag as a general purpose bag around town or whatever... so that's an added bonus.

Overall, recommended! and contrary to what others might say, the black is nice looking :) plus it's discrete

Most importantly, it looks inconspicuous. It just looks like a small bag. A man bag, if you will. Less importantly, it's extremely practical. You can take all the bits out of it and arrange it however you like. It also fits much more than you'd think - I can fit an EM10 with 25 and 45, and a Canon Ae1 and 50 in it. With room for a tiny tripod and all the lens caps, batteries and whatever in the front pockets. Another thing is that something to do with the top cover means it's incredibly easy to get in and out of and I'm sure that has been designed into it (not just talking about the quick release buckles).

One thing to note is that the 'Small' isn't big enough for documents. You'll need the next one up if you want to be able to put papers in without folding them. Other than that, the it does brilliantly at carrying numerous small objects, camera related or otherwise. It's a great bag. One star off for the steepish price.
