John Chiltons biography of Lady Day has been the definative memorial to the greatest vocalist jazz has, or ever will, produce, The attention to detail is remarkable .Chilton stresses in his introduction that it was his remit to strip away the myth, legend and lies that have surrounded Billie`s life and just stick to the fact. Billie lived a very colourful life, it doesn`t require embellishment. John Chilton was a musician himself, and a very good one. He has the ability to transport us back to the musicians life in the 30s 40s and 50s, the ups and downs, triumphs disappointments and, in Billie`s case the heartbreaking lifestyle choices that this great artist made.Reading this book all over again, the detail and circumstances of all of the recording sessions made me want to play all of my LPs and CDs with a new insight. John Chilton`s book is not just a great biography, it is a great book by any measure.
