Book Description

7 April 2013
Bill Bruford, once called the godfather of progressive-rock drumming, has been at the top of his profession for four decades. This is his memoir of life at the heart of prog rock, art rock, and modern jazz, playing with Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Earthworks and many more. It is an honest and entertaining account of life on the road and in the studio, rubbing shoulders with the famous, the less famous, and the infamous, and creating an impressive tally of great music. A rock musician with the temperament of a classical musician who became a jazz musician, Bruford defies all the clichés about drummers. He says: "You write what you have to write, you play what you have to play, because you cannot sleep at night. If you can sleep at night, you shouldn't be doing this anyway." From time to time, at polite dinner parties, someone will ask Bill what he does. He replies that he is a musician. "Yes, but what do you really do?" retorts the enquirer. This unusual, funny and insightful music memoir answers that question.

4.0 out of 5 stars BILL BRUFORD AUTOBIOGRAPHY 8 Feb 2014

If anyone bought this to wallow in lurid tales of life on the road, they will be disappointed...but those who know and appreciate BB would not expect such tales so will enjoy his deep, incisive, frequently hilarious views on himself, life, the universe and drumming.

Yes, there are nods towards his frustration and anger at Messrs Fripp and Squire along the way...sadly the news that a nine piece KC is coming shortly with three drummers is a perspective I would love to hear! The book does bob around a bit with no obvious timeline and is all the better for it. An enjoyable and detailed book on all things Bruford!

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and real 5 Feb 2014

Bought as a present for my prog-rock musician husband, he devoured this in a matter of days. He tells me that the tone is friendly and genuine, and that he could definitely relate to a lot of the stories Bill tells, even when he comes out of them looking a bit naive or foolish. For anyone that thinks that progressive rock musos are all capes, carpets and ego, Bill's down-to-earth telling of his experiences would be a refreshing re-education.
