Book Description

From the moment Bill Bailey arrived to take up residence at Fiona Nelson’s home in the Tyneside town of Fellburn, he made his presence felt in no uncertain terms. As a young widow left badly off, and with three children to bring up, Fiona had come to know all the problems of trying to make ends meet. So despite the inevitably disapproving comments of her own mother, reckoned locally to be an interfering woman, she advertised for a lodger to help pay for some of the bills. The result was Bill, somewhat rough around the edges perhaps, but nobody’s fool and doing very nicely with his own business as a builder.

Bill often described himself as a middle-of-the-road man, valuing his freedom where personal matters were concerned, but it was not long before Fiona found she was wondering just what her world had been before he came into it. He might be outwardly an ordinary enough bloke, but he appeared to possess some pretty extraordinary qualities, which proved to have a great and lasting effect on the future lives of Fiona and her young family.

Catherine Cookson’s novel is a richly entertaining tale of human relationships which are warm-hearted, full of humour and powerfully dramatic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Character From Catherine Cookson 3 Dec. 2001
    Format:Paperback
Bill is a self made man, with a rough exterior, but scratch the surface and there is a man with a heart of gold underneath.
He comes into the life of Fiona and her 3 children at a time when they are in need of a strong character, to depend on. Much to Fiona's mothers disgust, they inevitably fall in love.
Each of the characters in this omnibus have believeable personalities, and each one will make you laugh and cry, as you follow them through the tribulations of their lives.
Fiona's son makes a remarkable friend in Sammy Love, a child that reminds Bill of his rough beginnings, and is taken into their hearts, when tragically, the young boy needs a home and a family.
Disaster strikes for the family, when a teenage crush goes terribly wrong, leaving broken, hearts and friendships, in the lives of the Bailey Family and their friends.
The most moving part of the omnibus, is, when a new baby is born into the Bailey household, but all is not what they had hoped for.
Overall, another Cookson marvel, she has yet again managed to draw the reader into the web of family life, and all of the joy and heart-ache that brings with it.
This book will have you both laughing and crying within the same page, a must read book, not just for Cookson fans, but an excellent choice for those reading her work for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anazing Writer...... 12 Mar. 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition
I read some of CC's books when I was young & did not apprecate her at all. Having aged quite a bit since then I have refound her on the Kindle. What an amazing writer she was bless her. I started this time around with "Slinky Jane", continued with "The Silent Lady" & now on to "Bill Bailey" all three are exceptionally good & all so different. She had a huge talent in descriptions of people; places & emoticons her characters you can imagine somewhere out there in the either going about there lives long after the books finishes as they are so real. I think myself blessed that there is a huge back catalogue for me to gradually wallow my way through lol tinged with the sad knowledge that there will sadly be no more
