Product Description

Bill Bailey joins forces with composer Anne Dudley and the BBC Concert Orchestra for an evening of music and comedy in this BBC special. Using both contemporary and classical references, Bill explains, in his unique way, the nuances of how the orchestra works and the lesser-known influences of various classical composers. Also included are some of his own original works, arranged and performed by himself and the orchestra under the guidance of musical maestro Anne Dudley.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gifted insanity 15 May 2009
By Mr. David C. Halliday TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Bill Bailey has carved himself a niche as a comedian with a brain and a love for music. His stage shows see him mix a rambling style of stand up mixed with musical comedy. It's during these musical monologues that Bailey really shines and his oddball genius can best be seen. So it is a great idea to have him take over the Albert hall and take his lunacy to a new level with a full symphony orchestra in tow. Rather than stretching his ideas too thinly, writ large they seem to take on a new lease of life and he appears more of a potty genius that the spaced out hippy he seems on tour.
At the beginning it appears as if this is going to be a modern 'Peter & the wolf' or 'Carnival of the animals' as he takes a brief look at various instruments but once he plays a rather spooky tribute to jellyfish on a theremin alongside the orchestra he begins to inject his own brand of humour onto proceedings and so it is that we get to enjoy cockney music's influence upon classical music,( the full orchestra going hell for leather on 'William Tell' with cockney interludes & bailey playing the spoons is good fun), a breakdown of 70's US cop show music is a little overlong but funny nonetheless, a jazz reading of the Dr.Who theme music is inspired! He also does a war of the worlds style re-take of his potty piece 'insect nation'.
There is a very gentle pace and humour here which is relaxing, entertaining & still very funny. If you are a fan of his then Bill Bailey will make you laugh once again with this very enjoyable concert. It has a very professional feel to it and goes a long way to spotlighting a very individual and funny entertainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful 7 Dec 2009
Format:DVD
Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra is fun and entertaining. I love this performance by Bill Bailey and I love his previous shows(which are also on dvd). But I am finding this dvd difficult to review because although Bill Bailey's fantasticly wierd sense of humour is portrayed throughout the performace, it doesn't dominate this particular show in the way that it does in his other routines. This performance shows off all the wonderful sounds and noises that a live orchestra can produce, alongside Bill's funny comments and quirky stories. At times, Bill joins in with some of his own music. You needn't be a huge fan of classical music to enjoy this amusing and fascinating performance. It is a light and funny show.

Bill does add to some of his previous songs and themes in this new dvd, which I found even more enjoyable when they are sung and played alongside the orchestra. He also speaks about new themes and ideas, mostly connected (in some way, no matter how strange) to the individual sounds of classical music. If you are looking for a stand up comedy routine full of new material, then this is not for you. This is a light, funny show fronted by Bill Bailey (and his mad sense of humour) alongside an award winning classical orchestra.

I love this dvd and highly reccommend it. No matter how many times I watch it, I find myself chuckling and feeling fascinated at the same time. But before you see Bill Bailey's picture and buy this dvd before you can blink, consider the title - don't expect another wierd and wonderful stand up routine. Instead, expect a wierd and wonderful commentry to strange sounds and marvellous music played by a classical orchestra.

Lots of comedians have recently released new dvds, but this one by Bill Bailey is totally unique and pure genius!

Recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, this is a great fun DVD that you can show to all the family, to any age group from 9 to 99 years. Educational, witty and funny, with great music, this is a true Bill Bailey's classic masterpiece.
