More About the Author

DENYS WATKINS-PITCHFORD, or 'BB' as he is known, was born in 1905. He grew up in Northamptonshire, where he spent many hours out in the open air as ill health prevented him from being sent to boarding school. He studied art in Paris and at The Royal College of Art in London, and for seventeen years was art master at Rugby School. He was already illustrating books before he began to write under his pseudonym, 'BB'.

The Sportsman's Bedside Book (1937) was the first to carry these now famous initials, followed by Wild Lone, the Story of a Pytchley Fox (1939) and Manka, The Sky Gypsy, The Story of a Wild Goose (1939). He was awarded the Carnegie Medal for The Little Grey Men (1941), the tale of the last gnomes in England, which established him in the forefront of literature for children. Many titles followed for both adults and children, and his reputation as a naturalist was further enhanced by contributions to The Field, Country Life and Shooting Times. He died in 1990.

Bill Badger and his hedgehog friend have an exciting holiday cruising along the rivers and canal on the 'Wandering Wind' where they meet old friends and enemies. As usual with BB's books the reader can appreciate the countryside and riverside through his descriptions and wonderful illustrations.

My 8 year old loves this book - he's now reading it for the 3rd time. The Bill Badger series of books are great reading, with well-laid plots and story lines.

This book is a new edition of one first published many years ago.

Can the 'powers that be', please re-print the entire series ?

Everything BB writes is lovely. Every sentence is constructed with an evident love of language.

A book from my childhood and was great to read it again. Bill Badger stories are brilliant for bedtime reading with children, think of Wind in the Willow and set it on the canals. I lived nearby the Grand Union as a child and was always looking out for Bill and his barge!

BB expresses his sense of humanity through the animals in his story with warmth and charm. The reason for the four stars is that I have to leave room for a fifth star for several of his other greater books should I ever have to review them.
