Book Description

1 Sep 2000

All yoga students, beginners or advanced, will benefit from this accessible book. It studies each of the 26 movements, breathing exercises and rest poses that form the basis of every Bikram yoga class. Regular practise will completely transform your health by reversing and preventing illness. This is the only guide available on Bikram Yoga.

‘It’s never too late, it’s never too bad, you’re never too old, you’re never too sick to start from scratch once again.’ Bikram Choudhury

Bikram yoga began when Bikram, a former yoga champion, made a full recovery from a crippling accident thanks to yoga, heat and his guru, Bishnu Ghosh. His guru then sent Bikram to Bombay to heal the sick with yoga. Finding that he did not have enough time to help everybody individually, Bikram began to develop an accessible sequence of postures that everyone could follow and benefit from. Today, every class follows the same sequence of 26 postures and exercises in a studio heated to 100 degrees F.

This reader-friendly guide studies each of the 26 movements in detail, showing and describing the ‘ideal’ position as well as what the beginner is more likely to be able to achieve initially and the problems they are likely to encounter. Each move is also accompanied by details of its specific health benefit and a student’s personal experience of the posture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class 4 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
For anyone out there who is considering taking up yoga, whether it be for relaxation or physical fitness, this is the book for you. I have had this book for 15 years and it is the only yoga book I own that is easy to understand and use. If you are not sure if you are in the pose correctly, you can refer to the book and it explains exactly how it should feel. The "ideal" and "reality", ("what you actually feel like") sections for each pose, including illustrations are so perfect (and so funny). Great fun and I defy enyone not to become hooked.

I am almost certain that the negative reviews are from people who have never attended a class. If you haven't attended at least a few classes run by a professional then you will never understand this book and it will gather dust on your shelf i.e you've wasted your money. In fact, I would say that you should do it consistently for at least a month before attempting it by yourself.

I've done Bikram for a few months now and I am absolutely hooked - absolutely. Work commitments do not always allow me to attend a class so I work out using my book at home. After you've referred to the book a few times, to understand what you should be feeling and which sequence comes next, then you'll be fine. I know all 26 poses off by heart now and i feel sooooo much better. The health benefits are amazing and the feeling of well being is very uplifting, I sleep like a baby now. My headaches, lazy bowel problems and painful periods are now a thing of the past. But even better, the sauna effect has completely cleared my skin. No matter how small the pimple, it often takes months to fade but (wow!!!) my skins feels like silk now,it's positively glowing AND my hair has grown considerably.

Bikram is THE only form of exercise for me. I'm done with the crazy brow beating aerobics and running. Bikram is the way forward.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and follow, suits all levels 23 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I discovered this book while practising bikram yoga. This book is very easy to follow, the text is supplemented with illustations of each position, giving both the ideal(for advanced) and realistic(for beginnners) end positions. The encouragement giving throughout is both amusing and uplifting. I can throughly recommend this book, the only drawback being that practising bikram at home doesnt provide the intense heat needed to get the most from your session

4.0 out of 5 stars You'll be surprised how good it is! 17 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Using this book, all you need is time, dedication and a little clear space to achieve wonders for your strength, flexibility and balance. It might look daunting, but after your first full sequence you'll feel the difference and after two weeks people around you will see the difference. Well laid out, clearly explained and easy to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book 17 Oct 2011
By truth
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have just started a Bikram yoga class. I love this book because it shows you all the poses as they are ideally done plus what a beginner can expect to be able to do. Plus it has notes from people who go to classes, and clearly explains the benefits of each pose. Lighthearted too. Only criticism is that some of the photos are a bit strange, and of poor quality.

A very informal style of presenting the material, almost like a script with actors. There are lots of pictures to show the postures. I would recommend this book if you are participating in or thinking about joining a hot yoga class.

This book is very well written & encourages the new comers to Bikram to not give up once you start Bikram. Easy & pleasant read, useful to have to understand the postures better. Very useful . Would recommend it as an aid to read after having attended your first Bikram session . It helped me understand that I wasn't doing the poses the right way & How to improve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good 28 Jun 2010
By Ad
Format:Paperback
Great book, does exactly what it should, but i'd say it's better for people who've done a fair bit of Bikram before and just can't make it to a class, rather than complete beginners.

Not the book's fault, just the nature of this type of exercise, better to be taught properly first and use this as a memory jogger.
