What an awesome second album! Man, these guys can rock. Sweet Water Pools has to be one of the great opening tracks of any album ever. The title track is simultaneously magical and mad. The whole album is full of warped and wonderful songs that should have been mega-hits if there were any justice in the world. As it is, the one hit that did come from the album, I Wanna Be A Flintstone, effectively killed the band's career by consigning them to the bleak wilderness of the 'novelty hit.' They deserved so much more. The Messiahs are so good they should have a place among the greats: Hendrix, The Ramones, The Stones, The Who ... Yep, they really are that good. One of the best, fastest, tightest rhythm sections of all time backing a true genius on scorching guitar and lead vocals in the unlikely, shaven-headed form of Bill Carter. The result? Blisteringly fabulous, furiously driving rock music, blissfully obsessed with Americana and pop culture. Chuck Berry updated for the post-punk generation. Love 'em! Just love 'em!!!If the grotesquely awful Abba deserve a hit musical and a movie, the supremely marvellous Messiahs must at least warrant a CD reissue. Surely? I mean, really, come ON! Yay! We did it! The second coming of the Messiahs! Amazon power rocks! Get 'em NOW! Gun Shy Awesome first album ... Screaming Blue Messiahs Live at the Beeb ...

Live The Screaming Blue Messiahs were a ferocious proposition .Employing a rhythmic, blues-influenced guitar style they were one of a bunch of notable rock trio's (The Jam Husker Du Big Black ) who made a noise bigger than their composite parts. Bill Carter (vocals and guitar), Chris Thompson (bass guitar and vocals) and Kenny Harris (drums) whipped up a maelstrom when I saw them in Manchester in 1987.The band were touring to promote their third album Bikini Red released the same year .Anyone seeing the band that night unfamiliar with the album would have been astonished on hearing it. It has it's hard edged moments but is way way poppier than the rockabilly frenzy I witnessed . I Wanna Be a Flintstone", which was later included on the soundtrack to the Flintstones filmThe Flintstones [DVD] [1994] gave the band their only chart entry and while it has an insanely catchy chorus ("Yabba Dabba doo time") is resolutely silly. The band deserve better than a solo novelty hit But then this album is an invigorating blend of the glitzy tuneful -"I Can Speak American " , "Lie Detector (My favourite , with its squelch keyboard effects) and the signature slashing diamond coated chords-"Sweet Water Pools "( one of the great opening tracks on any rock album ) , "Too Much Love " ,Jesus Chrysler Drives A Dodge ". The churning rhythms and monk like harmonies on the title track make it a genuine idiosyncrasy , even on an album as schizophrenic as this , even taking the gnarly rockabilly of "55-The Law " and waltz like ...errr "Waltz " into account . Brilliantly produced by Vic Maile who places the percussion forward in the mix giving the music a muscular and powerful live edge Bikini Red is a great example of how a bunch of fantastic rock musicians with brilliant tunes ( all the tracks are either Carter solo efforts or written with Tony Moon who Carter had been in the band Motor Boys with )are one of the most vital thrills music has to offer. Bikini Red is a classic example of the genre. Yabba dabba doo time indeed.

Brilliant Bikini Red,

Paid a stack for a second hand copy of the original CD release of this and it has been an item too rare for too long. Great to see a reissue. 'Sweetwater Pools': like a David Lynch nightmare in one of the sharpest, most muscular songs you could ever hear. 'Bikini Red': likewise, close your eyes and let the film play...'I Wanna Be A Flinstone' is probably the throwaway track but was the closest SBM came to a hit. Honestly, this is well worth the price of admission but some extra tracks would have been good. It is brilliant. And 'Gun Shy' likewise. 'Totally Relgious' would be a good reissue too if the bottom end was to be beefed up.
