Synopsis
This eclectic entry in the "extreme sports" genre takes a close, fictionalized look at the world of California motorcycle clubs. (It is based on an L.A. New Times article.) The great Laurence Fishburne appears as Smoke, the unbeaten "king of Cali" motorcycle racing, and president of The Black Knights. When Smoke's ace mechanic (Eriq La Salle) is killed by a flying bike, his furious son Kid (Derek Luke), starts his own club, the Biker Boyz, to gain respect and challenge Smoke for the coveted crown. Bronx-born director Reggie Rock Blythewood keeps the action flowing from drag race to party and back again, steeping the audience in the ritual of the subculture, allowing it to serve as more than a mere backdrop to the coming-of-age mythos and adrenaline pumping, kinetically edited race and stunt sequences. A great soundtrack helps the narrative roll smoothly over some of the film's dramatically bumpy stretches, and music icon Kid Rock has a memorable turn as Dogg, Smoke's rough riding chief rival. Larenz Tate, Orlando Jones, and Djimon Honsou also lend strength as their fellow bikers. The very cool Lisa Bonet and the very fine Meagan Good play Smoke's and Kid's respective love interests.

1.0 out of 5 stars Biker Boyz - the "z" says it all..., 26 Jan 2007
This has to be one of the worst films I've ever had the displeasure of being forced to watch. It bears no connection to real-life bikers or biking, and is rather a film about two black street gangs, with Japanese motorbikes being included simply so they can pretend this is a biker's film. Trust me - it isn't. The "music" in this film is absolutely awful, being typical modern chart rap/hip-hop; the acting is appalling, there is no real plot, every minute is utterly dull and boring, and there are far too many utterly fake biking moments for this film to have an ounce of realism to it. This film is an insult not only to bikers, but also to true black culture. As a result, I personally despise this film and feel certain that the majority of other people will hate it too.

An appalling film. Avoid!

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally laughable, 12 Dec 2003
By A Customer
I kept watching this in the hope that the story-line and "action" would pick up... I might of well have turned it off. If you're looking for some serious bike tricks then buy a Superbike video, want some good acting? Don't get this.
For the storyline read the prev revues - you'll get the idea. Personally, most of the riding scenes were laughable - try sitting up on a bike doing 140mph+ and you'll see what I mean! I was also impressed at their stopping prowess from 180mph!!! Wish my bike had brakes like that (especially on a dirt track!).
All I can say is, Hollywood definately has a strange view of Bikers - I feel sorry for the proper Yank Jap bike brigade...

1.0 out of 5 stars Goes wrong on many levels......., 30 Oct 2003
Biker Boyz goes wrong on so many levels that it's hard to know where to start. One problem is that there's not a single likable - or even memorable - character in it. Half of the film's characters are never even properly introduced. We have no idea who they are. We don't even know some of their names. Lisa Bonet, for example, appears at the beginning of the movie. She has no apparent purpose for being there. About halfway through, we kind of get the idea that she's Smoke's girlfriend, yet she still seems as irrelevant as ever. Then there's Soul Train (Orlando Jones), another of the Black Knights. We are stunned to eventually learn that he's an attorney. And how do we find this out? Kid gets arrested and needs a lawyer. All of a sudden, this unexplained biker who has been wandering the perimeter of the film is revealed to be a lawyer - at the exact moment the screenplay needs him to be. This is hopeless writing.
