4.0 out of 5 stars A later Biggles adventure involves a castle rescue, 23 Oct 2008
By John Mogridge (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is one of the later adventures in Biggles' career as a flying policeman. It is very difficult to obtain as a hardback copy and even paperback copies are to be prized.

Biggles and the team are called in to investigate a series of robberies which appear to have been planned by an underworld mastermind. A novel twist in the series is that Ginger has to go undercover by disguising himself as a female.

Bertie justifies his role in the Air Police when he comes up with a clue that helps to throw suspicion on Lord Malboise, the owner of Brindon Hall in Sussex. Is his stately home with its wildlife sanctuary really a cover for criminal activities ?

Ginger and Bertie travel to France to probe the connection that Lord Malboise has with a large chateau and end up imprisoned in one of its towers. The second half of the book contains an intriguing episode where Ginger uses a novel way of making contact with the outside world.

Biggles and Marcel are then drawn more fully into the adventure. Meanwhile face-to-face confrontation with the enemy leads to some dialogue that reveals W.E.Johns didn't consider every lord on the horizon was "noble" and that by contrast Bertie is to be applauded for actually working for his living.
