Book Description

Biggles is back! And with new retro-style covers he's bigger than ever!

Product Description

Out of the corner of his eyes Biggles saw Dick go overboard and disappear under the foam, but he could do nothing to help him. Indeed, as he fought to keep the flying-boat under control, it seemed certain that during the next minute or two the others must join him. Ashen, he looked at Algy. 'Jump when she hits!' he cried, in a shrill, strangled voice, and dived deliberately at the rocks. Biggles, Algy and Ginger help a young lad evade a violent thief and find themselves plunged into a dangerous treasure hunt searching for a long-lost pirate hoard of gold in the Caribbean.

This is my favourite Biggles I have read, and does not include the usual air combat of other stories. This one includes shipwrecks , pirate costumes and a cursed doubloon which seems to kill every one who touches it , except Biggles and his little band of course.A must for all Biggles lovers.

This story demonstrates the skill of Captain W.E.Johns at his best during the uninhibited days of the 1930s. Four of the Biggles books use a direction in their titles yet each one is radically different from the others with the points of the compass on their front pages.

Captain Johns was an expert on the history of pirates and uses this knowledge to the full to present an adventure involving 20th century heroes and villains. He cleverly blends many different storytelling devices that were bound to capture the attention of young people who wanted dramatic excitement in their reading.

There is a prologue about the desperate days of buccaneering. There is a plausibly written letter which sets young Dick Denver and Biggles,Algy and Ginger on the trail of a tremendous treasure. There is a vicious and ruthless villain who seems to anticipate their every move. There are corrupt authorities who steal their aeroplane and the food on board.

Do you want to know what it feels like to crash into a hurricane-riven sea ? Do you want to know the experience of nearly drowning as every wave drags you back down over the shingle ? Do you want to feel an open razor blade within inches of your throat ? Do you want to force your way through a tropical jungle wearing nothing but your shorts ?

Dick and his comrades fall into adventure and extreme peril in many different ways during the course of this story. Behind each new turn of the plot there appears to be the effect of a curse that has lasted for more than 250 years.

Clearly inspired by 'Treasure Island' Captain Johns never slackens the pace until the last page when the voyage is finally over.

Format:Paperback
Biggles flies west is yet another super adventure story from W E Johns. Books are not written like this anymore which is a real shame. Meant to young people but everyone can enjoy a Biggles book. Biggles flies west is a bit different from the normal adventure, all of the cast are there Algy and Ginger what makes this book so good is the ship wrecks and all that goes with it.
A must for all.
