This '2-on-1' disc features only 6 live tracks, track 1 - 6, which were originally an EP back in 1980. Tracks 7 - 21 are studio recordings (tracks 10 - 21 being the official "Biggest Sport" album). With this 1980 release, 999 has pretty much let go of the raucous punk guitars and thrashing drum tempo for a much more radio-friendly sound. There's plenty of new wave and power punk influence (most noticeable is a Ramones sound on the track "The Biggest Prize in Sport"), but the album is also a major throwback to late 60s pop rock. Catchy melodies and rhythm guitars are often blended with twangy surfer rock sounds--and plenty of beach boy-esque background vocals! However, the lead vocalist's tone is still straight up punk, making for an odd combination.
All-in-all, it's definitely an early 80s pop punk treat for those looking to hear something they missed back then. If you like The Ramones, The Knack, and The Romantics circa 1980, you'll definitely like this one.
