Mr Benn is one of the all time great childrens characters and 2011 is the 40th anniversary of David McKee's much loved television series. As we all know, Mr Benn is an ordinary man and lives on an ordinary street, when he is invited to a fancy dress party. The books and TV series follows Mr Benn's adventures, as he visits a fancy dress shop and emerges from the changing room into different adventures, depending on his choice of outfit.
In this book, Mr Benn is a clown. He finds the circus cannot go to their next show as the room is blocked by boulders. Luckily, Mr Benn meets an old friend from a previous adventure, Smasher, who finds his vocation as he is so strong and ends up staying with the circus. Mr Benn finally manages to have fun as a clown, before going back to the shop and changing into his own clothes.
Tall Stories (creators of The Gruffalo stage play) have created a wonderful Mr Benn show, which my children recently watched and loved. I would highly recommend going to see it if it is performed near you (www.mrbennlive.com). There is also an excellent DVD,
Mr Benn - the Complete Series [DVD. This book is a delightful story, with lovely artwork and if, like me, you watched Mr Benn as a child too, hopefully you will also enjoy it!
